Mankind has colonized the galaxy, but during our interstellar travels, we discovered a terrifying secret out in the Outer Darkness of space. Join Captain Joshua Rigg and the crew of the starship Charon as they encounter demonic possessions, hauntings, cosmic horror, and more! All-star writer JOHN LAYMAN (CHEW) and artist AFU CHAN (Immortal Iron Fists) are ready to let you know that outer space is terrifying.

"I'm a polisher. Rather than a person with a lot of ideas, I usually take one idea and finesse it. Let the single idea grow and grow and grow. In the case of OUTER DARKNESS, there is a fully formed set of ‘rules’ to how the universe works. Life, death, the afterlife, or lack thereof. I also went in an gave every single significant character a hearty backstory, their own motivations, pasts and secrets, which comes in handy when putting together an ensemble book. I suppose there is a reason I can only work on one long-form book at a time, because by the time it's on paper it's a very robust, rich universe."–John Layman

CLASSICS CORNER

SOUTHERN CROSS

AUTHOR: Becky Cloonan
ARTIST: Andy Belanger
AGE RANGE: M - Mature (18+)
SERIES TYPE: Ongoing Series

COLLECTED AS: SOUTHERN CROSS, VOL. 1 TP
FORMAT: Paperback; 160 Pages
PUBLICATION DATE: Jan 19, 2016
ISBN: 9781632155597
DIAMOND CODE: AUG150495

COLLECTED AS: SOUTHERN CROSS, VOL. 2 TP
FORMAT: Paperback; 160 Pages
PUBLICATION DATE: Jul 25, 2017
ISBN: 9781534300439
DIAMOND CODE: FEB170748

SUMMARY: NOW BOARDING: Southern Cross, tanker flight 73 to TITAN! Alex Braith is on board retracing her sister's steps to the refinery moon, hoping to collect her remains and find some answers. The questions keep coming though—how did her sister die? Where did her cabin mate disappear to? Who is that creep across the hall? And why does she always feel like she's being watched? Inspired by classic mysteries and weird fiction, SOUTHERN CROSS is a crucible of creeping anxiety and fear as Braith struggles with the ghosts of her past on board a ship that holds secrets best kept buried.

“... I've always wanted to work in this world. The early '80s film culture is where my heart lies for sure. Longer held shots of gorgeous backgrounds in worlds not conceived before. So, that being said, I knew that's what I wanted to draw. I had been working on sword and sandal stuff for so long that I really need a 180° switch on content. I love it so much more. I think it was maybe a year before SOUTHERN CROSS hit the shelves that I started sketching characters that would live in this world. I'm pretty sure I redesigned the characters for this more than a couple times. As far as our team, it's always the most fun to partner up with your best friend and we are both very like-minded and driven in the way we create. In a lot of ways, it comes from the same dark places. Team Southern Cross is pretty heavy; we're like the band Immortal but in comic creator bodies...”–Andy Belanger

WRITING WORKSHOP -
SHORT 'N' SCARY STORY CONTEST

AGE RANGE: All Ages
ATTENDANCE: 15-30
TIME FRAME: 45 Min - 1 Hour - Repeating

SUMMARY: It's not quite Hallowe'en yet, but that's no reason you can't enjoy a good fright. In this program, challenge your patrons to create terrifying tales using two prompts that seem, at first, unrelated. Much the like gods and ghosts in space featured in OUTER DARKNESS, this merging of seemingly disparate elements is meant to enrich the story experience in unexpected ways. Let your aspiring authors surprise themselves! Work from brainstorming through finished product over several sessions and for an added bonus, display the finished products around your branch and let other patrons vote for the one they like best. If you space your sessions out correctly, you should be able to cap the event series with an award ceremony and public reading just in time for October's ghoulish holiday festivities!

LIBRARY SPOTLIGHT

In this month's Library Spotlight, we're excited to showcase The Indianapolis Public Library's Indiana Comic Con 2018! We can't wait to see what 2019 brings and we look forward to supporting their efforts with creator visits and donations.

"Indiana Comic Con [was] on March 31st. We had a steady flow of patrons stopping by, many surprised and happy that we were there to represent the Library. I counted over approximately 120 people stop by our booth on March 31st. Lots of people thought we were selling the freebies and were pleasantly surprised that everything was FREE. Many people were from out of state or did not live within the county."

Send us your events for a chance to be featured in future editions!
