Friends,

We learned this week that the U.S. may send 120,000 troops to the Middle East. Your Congressional representatives need to hear from you today -- call on them to oppose an unconstitutional war with Iran.

Are you interested in deepening your involvement with the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center? We are currently looking for a new executive director, as well as a summer intern and volunteers for our International Day of Peace organizing committee. Details are below for all three opportunities. Please help us spread the word by forwarding this newsletter to your networks.

Thank you,
WPJC

Seeking Volunteers for Planning Committee

Remember how much fun we had last year with that great meal, community gathering, and incredible performance by Naomi Wachira? Well, it's time to get to work on this year's event and we need your help! Due to a lot of great changes in peoples' lives, our committee has shrunk and we're looking for an infusion of new energy, ideas, and networks.

We need volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and skillsets, so please consider joining us in building the future of this event if it has moved you in the past. If you'd like to be involved this summer in planning this late September event, please reach out to Josh as soon as possible.

2019 Seabeck Conference
Fierce Vulnerability: Direct Action that Heals and Transforms

Registration is now open for the 61st annual Fellowship of Reconciliation NW Regional Conference at Seabeck, Washington. It will take place Friday, June 28 through Monday, July 1, 2019, and is presented by East Point Peace Academy & Western Washington Fellowship of Reconciliation.

"Fierce Vulnerability is an attempt to build a movement...that understands the assertiveness that is needed to address the crises of our times. A movement that sees social change as a radical act of healing. A movement that knows that each of us needs to heal as much as those we may feel compelled to blame. A movement that knows that violence hurts all parties. A movement that will never see any individual as disposable, undeserving of dignity, or incapable of transformation."

Registration and more info is at: https://wwfor.org/annual-conference

1st Body Positive Block Party and 11th annual Naked Bike Ride during June Art Walk

On June 7, participants will ride as bare (or clothed) as they dare, to protest our "indecent exposure" to fossil fuels, highlight bicyclists' vulnerability, and redefine cultural narratives about body image. Not only is the ride part of a larger global event in 70 cities of 20 countries, this year it will lend itself to a brand new event, a Body Positive Block Party (body painting, live music, and more).

  • 4 p.m.: Body Positive Block Party in front of Make.Shift Art Gallery (306 Flora Street)
  • 6 p.m.: Naked Bike Ride through downtown
  • Block party continues after the ride

For general inquiries and to make requests for disability accommodations, contact one of the Naked Bike Ride organizers:

  • Zac Robertson (509) 679-4194
  • Hannah Schell (360) 522-1260
