A Gift of Friendship

It is often said that it takes a village to raise a child. One of the most enjoyable aspects of SHC English classes is watching moms and their children make new friends, laugh and exchange recipes. Our volunteers too have many stories to share about their new family friends. SHC works everyday to create welcoming communities for refugee and immigrant moms– networks of peers, trusted teachers, tutors, advocates and mentors who will look out for the well-being of newly arrived families and their children.

This Mother’s Day, consider making a gift of friendship to benefit refugee and immigrant moms who live in our community. Moms who rely on SHC for practical support such as:

  • Joining our family-friendly English language classes.
  • Getting matched to a volunteer tutor who will help break the isolation of a new country.
  • Navigating children's school registration.
  • Sorting out issues with food stamps.
  • Getting a medical appointment.

Give a gift of friendship to refugee moms today.

A joyful mom after learning that Green Cards were issued for her family. SHC volunteers and friends recruited a pro-bono attorney to prepare the family's request for adjustment of status. For this family of seven it took two drivers and a team of volunteers from combined organizations to coordinate doctor appointments for vaccinations, and immigration appointments, all while Mom was getting ready to deliver a beautiful little baby girl.
Mom turned teacher! Meet Amal, SHC's Early Childhood Specialist and newest hire. Amal is a former student of SHC. She came to the US two years ago with her husband and two young sons. Amal recently obtained her Childcare Certification from Prince George's Community College, which required 90-hours of training. She did this while working at a local restaurant and taking care of her family.
Moms learning English through SHC! More than a hundred moms with kids in tow, attended SHC classes offered at the SHC Learning Center and PGMLS branches this past winter. Many students who come to SHC have limited or interrupted formal education. The end winter session was marked with a party and graduation ceremony to celebrate the students' accomplishments.

Moms volunteering! Each SHC class is made possible by volunteers who work with the children while moms learn English. Lila and Kate whose own kids are grown teenagers enjoy time with the tiniest students in the room!
