Teacher & Team Corner

Unlike many of Adaire’s faculty members, Music-Brass/Woodwind teacher Elizabeth Green is not a Philadelphia-area native. She grew up in Buffalo, NY until the age of 13, when she moved to Las Vegas, NV, where she finished high school. The college years brought her back East, though, to study music education at the State University of New York at Fredonia and then on to Columbia University’s Teachers College, where she earned a master's degree in music education.

“I chose teaching as a profession because I am in love with learning and consider all of my teachers along the way to have had a hand in shaping the person into which I've grown. What could be a more powerful or important job than that?” Today Ms. Green loves putting the ‘A’ in STEAM at Adaire. “My favorite thing about Adaire is how supportive our principal, my teacher colleagues, and the Adaire parents are of the arts. Without these three integral components, arts and music programs cannot thrive much less exist.”

With the school year coming to a close, Ms. Green and her students are excited to share all that they’ve been practicing. “My band students are currently working toward our end of the year in-school concert and evening collaborative benefit performance,” she says. “Think about it, in math or reading the final exam is usually a test. In band or orchestra, the final exam is a performance that you get to share with all of the people that love and care about you. Obviously, I teach the best subject out there!!”

Ms Green is a self-proclaimed antique and history nut, and when she’s not busy shaping our school’s young musical minds she loves going to garage sales and flea markets and finding old stuff to add to her home decor. She’s also an animal lover and enjoys waking up every day to a husky dog and two cats.

Girls Inc. says thank you!:  Thank you Adaire Community for supporting our donation drive for Families Forward Philadelphia! The drive was a huge success and the 6th and 8th graders organized 17 boxes of personal hygiene items to be delivered to the shelter. The 8th graders also visited Lutheran Settlement House to volunteer with the seniors and organize the food pantry. They learned about the importance of taking initiative to help others in their community. Thank you again for your generosity!

Congratulations to the Adaire Chess Club for finishing 10th citywide:  Thanks to parent & volunteer Chess Leader Mike Sheridan, and parent volunteers Vicki James and Mark Shanaman.
See "How to Choose A Just Right Book" here.

Need Help Choosing a Book that works your child?  CLI Coach, Ms. Halpern wants to help you help your student pick the right book.  Students choose books for independent reading for many different reasons: “I just saw the movie,” “I like the pictures,” “My friend just finished it.” Students usually choose books that appeal to them visually. The front covers are designed to capture their interest and emotions. However, many students do not choose a book that they can actually read independently and with success (Parks, 2004).

If the book is too difficult, it will lead to frustration and too little of a challenge will lead to boredom (Routman, 2003). So the book needs to be “just right.” A just right book is one that provides a little bit of a challenge for the student. It should be a book that the student finds interesting and can be read with a small amount of assistance with the text. Spending time reading just right books during independent reading time will help students become stronger.

Check out Philadelphia City Rowing for summer camp.
Public Service Announcements

Attention bikers to school:  It is amazing to see that students are riding bikes to school.  Please purchase U-locks or heavy metal locks to lock your bikes. While no lock is 100% safe, wire cable locks, especially thin wire cable locks, are easy for bike thieves to cut.  Wish we lived in a world where bike locks weren’t necessary---especially in front of a school — but until such time, plan accordingly and invest in a heavy lock!

Shoes:  As the weather warms up please remember that school shoes must be closed toed and fully cover the ankle.  The full Adaire dress code can be found here in the Handbook.  In a nutshell the following shoes are NOT permitted:

  • Flip flops
  • Sandals
  • Slides
  • Open toe shoes
  • Shoes with open backs - like clogs
  • Jellies

Bike or Walk to School Day:   On Wednesday, May 8th, the annual "Bike to School" ride invites Adaire students, families, teachers, and caregivers to bike to school starting from Penn Treaty Park. We're gathering at Penn Treaty Park before 8 a.m., with bikes, scooters, gliders, etc., then leaving for Adaire. We'll have a bicycle officer from the 26th escort us for the route to Adaire. It's a very casual event, so you can just show up if it works for your family that morning. Happy biking! Or scooting, if that's your thing. Or cargo-biking! If it's got wheels and ride it to school, bring it! Kids from other area schools---preschools, homeschools, whatever — are welcome to join in the fun on wheels!

Volunteer Corner

May 9th: FoA Annual Spring Student Concert volunteers needed:
Is your kid participating in the May 9th concert?  If so, are you willing to help? We’re looking for about 18 total volunteers---two volunteers for each of the classrooms that will be in the concert (Rooms 100, 101, 102, 104, 106) plus we'll need help with Strings, Brass, & ASAP Drama Club.  Volunteers will be expected to arrive at 5pm to help sort out shirts for these 8 groups then they will sit in the auditorium with the children to assist in getting them on/off the stage & keeping them quiet for the whole of the concert. It’s simple as that!  Please use this
