St. Thomas the Disciple

To read "Thomas the Disciple" (last Sunday's sermon),

This year, St. Patrick's had an incredible Holy Week celebration. We have so much to be thankful for, God is amazing!!
“Alleluia!! He is Risen!”
We are so thankful for all who planned and worked to make our Easter Worship and activities very beautiful, welcoming, and full of goodness!
Just to name a few, the flowers, potted lilies, and Narthex table were arranged by Laurie Boone Hogen, Margaret Merchat, Mary Field and Barbara Klingbeil.

Sandy Keith, who is head of the Altar Guild worked very hard with her team preparing for Holy Week.
Margaret Merchat and Alicia Wray organized the Easter Egg Hunt. There were over 20 children who enjoyed the egg hunt!

Merle Holtzen & Pam Moore put together bulletins with Xavier Fonseca's help.
There are many others who helped with the special coffee hour and advertising our Easter event to the community.
St. Patrick's is very blessed to have dedicated parishioners who love our church allowing Holy Week to be a lovely experience for our congregation and community. God bless you All!
On April 25 hundreds gathered at Congregation Shomrei Torah’s Gun Violence Prevention Forum featuring CA Congressman
Mike Thompson and a panel of speakers. In the crowd were these concerned Episcopalians, parishioners from both St. Patrick’s and Incarnation. (Front row from left: Carolyn Greene, Laurie Boone-Hogen, Eleanor Albon, Minerva Haddad.  Left, back row: Deacon Marcia Tyriver, Laura McClellan, Kate Aldrich)

Rabbi George Gittleman recognized the current Passover celebration of the Jews’ historic fleeing  with Moses from Egyptian oppression and found it similar it to the need for freeing our culture from the current gun violence epidemic: “Let our people go!”

Congressman Thompson was applauded for his authorship of HR-8, the House’s resolution  to require background checks for all firearm sales.  As it is now, without universal background checks, 40% of firearm sales are done with no background checks (at gun shows, online, and in private).  93% of firearms used in crime are illegally procured.  Although passed recently in the House, the bill has not been allowed a hearing in the US Senate, despite the fact that 90-97% of Americans are for universal background checks.

Dr. Joshua Weil, a local emergency room physician, recognized that gun violence is a public health issue. Americans are 25 times more likely to die from gun-related cause than are people in any other “developed” nation.
Jeannine Ruggeiro spoke of the never-ending emotional trauma she experiences having been shot and wounded in midst of the 2017 Las Vegas Harvest Music Festival massacre.  Ruth Moore, Santa Rosa Middle School eighth grade teacher, related the sobering reality that staff meetings now need to emphasize preparation for “active shooter” drills with the students whereas they always used to be focused on techniques for better teaching.  Referring to the easy accessibility to firearms even in CA, Sonoma County Public Defender Kathleen Pozzi, grieved for the deaths-by-guns, and said “It’s easy to pull a trigger…and then,… it’s gone”…life is gone and loss and grief to the victims’ and perpetrators’ families (and even to some perpetrators) is tremendous and never-ending.

Questions and answers following the panel and  featured speaker focused on what can be done to help end this epidemic of gun violence:  fund research about gun violence; legalize “red flag warnings” to report and temporarily remove firearms from domestic abusers as well as from people apt to endanger themselves or others; voluntary buy-back programs.

Note from the Rector ...

Saint Patrick’s congregation prays for each other, and others.  If you want to request prayer for yourself or someone else, there are two ways to do this.

You can contact the church office and ask that the person (first name only) be put on the Prayer List that we pray during the “Prayers of the People” on Sunday morning.  They will remain on the list for one month unless you ask us to take them off sooner.  If you want to extend the time, just let us know.
To put someone on this prayer list, you must first have their permission.

Secondly, the Daughters of the King pray regularly for people upon request.  You can give them the name of the person and what they want prayer for.  You would keep them posted as to how the person is doing and how their prayer needs may change.  This prayer list is confidential.  Again, you need to have the person’s permission.  If you would like to make a prayer request of the Daughters of the King, email Jackie Senter at musicmed@sonic.net.
Check Out Our New Look!

St. Patrick’s Family:

We are in the process of updating our parish website.  Our site already has a new look, with tabs for different topics and ministries.  You will be able to access the upcoming Sunday readings if you want to read them before our Sunday morning services.  There is a place to make donations, pay your pledge, and to make your offering for altar flowers, etc.

Please know that this is a work in progress.  We haven’t done everything yet we want to do (such as update text, add new pictures, and many other things).  So, take a look.  Let us know your thoughts and suggestions; and we will continue to update this important communication tool.  We would like to improve our site for the benefit of current congregants, visitors, and those in the community looking or a church home.

You also will be able to access the Parish Membership Directory on the website if you are a member of St Patrick’s.  If would like to do this, please call the church office for instructions.

Where are we in the transition to a new bishop?
We have successfully elected The Rev. Canon Megan Traquair to be 8th bishop here. We are planning and preparing for her consecration on June 29, 2019, pending consents from across the wider church and subsequent approval from the Presiding Bishop's office.

Our journey through this transition has carried us to the place where we intentionally and joyfully celebrate the ministry and gifts of Bishop Barry and his episcopate in this diocese.

We ask you now to send photos of your church, ministries and people, as well as cards, notes, and stories about the way that Bishop Barry has blessed you during his time as a bishop to communications@norcalepiscopal.org. Photos and notes will be included in a memory book for him. Please include your church name and city in the subject line.

The diocese is also giving Bishop Barry and Rev. Ann a trip to begin their life in retirement together. Donate here: https://goo.gl/DRQ1Me  Donors will be recognized.

O God, by your grace you have called us in this Diocese to a
goodly fellowship of faith. Bless our Bishop Barry, Bishop-elect Megan, other clergy, and all our people. Grant that your Word may be truly preached and truly heard, your Sacraments faithfully administered and faithfully received. By your Spirit, fashion our lives according to the example of your Son, and grant that we may show the power of your love to all among whom we live; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Do you have a guitar or banjo or ukulele or another stringed instrument?
Are you interested in becoming more proficient?  If so, we need your talents!  We are putting together a music group with FREE lessons, taught by John Waltz.

Our goal is to “grow our own” group to add joyful worship to our services and to help the congregation learn to sing with us, particularly at the earlier service.  We’ll be learning worship songs from a variety of sources.

Lessons will be every 2-3 weeks, with practices in between as schedules allow. Time & place to be determined, depending on the interest and where people live.

Tuesday, April 2, the group distributed food to 23 families!!
The food was stacked, the volunteers were manning their stands, the sun came out, and a score of customers lined up to receive the large and varied supply of groceries yesterday afternoon in front of the sanctuary.  Eleanor Albon, Laurie Boone Hogan, Dennis McCaffrey, Xavier Fonseca, Denise Morgan, and Gordan Freeman greeted the grateful customers and filled their bags.
