The next Salem City Council meeting will be held May 13, 2019, at 6:00 p.m in Council Chambers, 555 Liberty Street SE, Room 240. Our Salem Public Workshop May 8

Date: Wednesday, May 8, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Location: Court Street Christian Church, 1699 Court Street NE
Come learn the results of an analysis of the city's existing conditions and about future scenarios for how Salem could grow.The results will be presented in a draft report card that looks at how Salem performs against 20 top indicators

You will also hear results from Salem's first greenhouse gas emissions inventory. A draft inventory will be available at the May 8 meeting.

The public workshop is part of the first phase of the Our Salem project, which is a multi-year project to update the Salem Area Comprehensive Plan. This work will inform critical discussions and decisions about future growth in the Salem area. Get involved and learn more→

Volunteer Opportunity

Learn about the history of Salem gardens and spend some productive hours in pleasant company outdoors. Join our team of Lord & Schryver Deepwood Gardeners. Gardeners work on Thursday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to noon, with a break for coffee and treats, and a discussion of current projects. There may be field trips or planning meetings during the winter months. Volunteers will learn about the design and planting aesthetic of Elizabeth Lord & Edith Schryver and new gardening skills!  If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity contact Mark Akimoff at mark@lordschryver.org or 503-507-9622.

'May the Fourth Be With You' Event

Date: Saturday, May 4, 1:00 – 2:30 p.m.  
Location: Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty Street SE, Floors 2 and 3
Come to this all-ages celebration of all things Star Wars with members of the Cloud City Garrison, crafts, Star Wars Legos, photo opportunities, and a scavenger hunt. Contact the Salem Public Library for more information.

May 4 Grant and NEN Clean Up

Got junk? If you live in the Northeast or Grant Neighborhoods, your neighborhood association can help you get rid of it. Dispose of bulky items that are too large to fit in a garbage can. Recycle bicycles, small electronics, wood furniture, metal and tires. There will even be a free swap area. Please no refrigerators, air conditioners, construction debris, toxic materials, drywall, linoleum, paint, yard debris, windows or business trash. This second annual neighborhood event will be held at the Salem First Church of the Nazarene parking lot, 1550 Market Street NE, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. May 5 SWAN’s Fircrest Park Celebration

Have you been to Fircrest Park lately? There are more than a few new toys to enjoy! Southwest Association of Neighbors invites you to celebrate the beautiful new play equipment with food, games, activities, and more. The neighborhood association is providing burgers and hot dogs along with vegan and vegetarian options. You may bring a side dish to share. Please bring along lawn chairs or blankets as well. How will Salem use Federal Funds to Help Those in Our Community?

The City of Salem annually receives HOME Investment Partnerships and Community Development Block Grant program funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Annual Action Plan is a component of the five-year Consolidated Plan that specifically describes how the City of Salem and the Salem/Keizer Consor­tium will spend the federal resources over a one-year period for activities serving low- and moderate-income persons, the homeless, and persons with special needs. The draft Annual Action Plan will be available for public review and comment through Monday, May 20, 2019.
