For over 60 years COTA Queensland has worked with older people to influence decision making and create positive social change. We promote older people’s rights and advocate to Government on issues that affect us all as we age.
Our membership includes individual supporters, community and sector support organisations.

This weekend Australians have the opportunity to elect their next federal Government for the coming three years. Political leaders have spent considerable time trying to woo the votes of Queenslanders but to date the needs of those older people who are waiting for a home care package have been largely ignored.

The Aged Care Royal Commission has already acknowledged the scale of the waiting lists, the devastating impact on the people waiting and the strain on their families.Presently people are waiting up to two years or are being forced into inappropriate aged care or are dying before they receive the aged care they need. What does this say about our society?
Whichever party forms government after next weekend's election the care needs of the growing number of older people must be a high priority.
COTA Queensland is working with the Queensland Department of Communities Disability Services and Seniors, and The Ageing Revolution to co-facilitate a series of Age-friendly Workshops for local government, business and community organisations to assist them to create a great place to live and work, raise a family and grow older. These workshops aim to give communities a kickstart in their age-friendly planning.
COTA is also taking the opportunity to meet with older people in a series of Your Voice Matters conversations. To date access to appropriate health services is one of the themes. This aligns to COTA's State of the (Older) Nation 2018 report which is available at www.stateoftheoldernation.org.au. We are working with a number of Queensland's PHNs (Primary Health Networks) on their Older Persons Health strategies aiming to facilitate connected person-centred care.
We are also working with Palliative Care Queensland, Carers Queensland and Health Consumers Queensland to facilitate conversations across Queensland about Compassionate Communities and with the Department of Communities Disability Services and Seniors on their Thriving Communities initiative. Whatever tag it comes under the strengthening of communities is critical to supporting all Queenslanders to age well.

Your Voice Matters - be a part of a conversation to improve the lives of older Queenslanders.
We are holding a series of community conversations throughout the state and we want to hear from you!
Our population is ageing with more people living longer and healthier lives, so we need to build communities that support people to age well. Simply, when we create communities with older people in mind, we create liveable communities for everyone.

We are working to create an age-friendly Queensland with vibrant, healthy and equitable communities for all ages.
An age-friendly community is one that enables people of all ages to actively participate in community life by ensuring older people are free from age-related barriers that prevent participation and engagement.
To inform this work we have been hosting a series of Community Conversations throughout Queensland to discuss what's working well and what can be improved and how.
Each community is different and no one knows their community better than the people who live there and too often we have heard that people feel invisible and these conversations are aimed at giving people the space to tell us all about their communities and the opportunity to explore solutions to support them.
The information gathered will inform our broader work, advocating to Government the issues and solutions at a localised level.

Draft Queensland Transport Strategy (QTS) open for consultation
Transport is vital to Queenslanders, jobs, our economy and regional prosperity. I am passionate about delivering a single, integrated transport system, accessible to everyone. QTS is an important guiding document to achieve this vision.
The Draft QTS looks at how we can maximise the benefits of existing and emerging technology trends, like low and zero-emission vehicles and on-demand transport, to give Queenslanders the best possible transport system.
These new technologies present exciting opportunities to Queensland businesses and entrepreneurs. The final QTS will help outline how we can capitalise on these opportunities to drive employment growth in emerging industries to benefit Queensland jobs, businesses and the environment.
The strategy is available for review until 24 May 2019 on the Department of Transport and Main Roads’ (TMR) website at www.tmr.qld.gov.au/QueenslandTransportStrategy.

Exhibition opening
The Faces of Ageing exhibition is a visual exploration of everyday older people in the Maranoa region and beyond. The exhibition challenges the stereotypes associated with ageing.

Photographed by three COTA Community Ambassadors, who are older Queenslanders, the exhibition visually represents the importance of meaningful relationships and community, embracing the present and looking toward the future.

Recovered Futures Art Exhibition – Call for Artists
Artists with a lived experience of mental illness are invited to register to exhibit at the 2019 Recovered Futures Art Exhibition to be held 5-11 October 2019.
Entries are also open to artists who are carers or family members of someone with a mental illness.
This year, the event will take place in the Toowong Room – Brisbane City Hall. Due to room size limitations, there is no guarantee all artwork will be displayed, the Exhibition Committee will discuss this with artists as required.
Entries close July 12 2019.

Have your say: Aged Care Diversity Framework - Homelessness Action Plan
The Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG) is seeking your feedback on possible actions to make aged care better for people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness.
The actions have been developed by an expert reference group led by HAAG incorporating 600 survey responses, 45 site visits and 25 interviews with managers of specialist homelessness aged care providers.

The outcome of this consultation will be provided to the department for further consideration in June 2019.
