Celebrating 25 years

by Nooreen Harris, Coordinator

This year MNC celebrates its 25th anniversary. The Centre began before 1990 when a group of concerned Maleny residents recognised the need to develop responses to the growing needs of families, young people & people with special needs. The organisation was incorporated in 1994 & became the first community association in Maleny that had a specific purpose to address poverty & social disadvantage in the area... Report: The House six months on

Previously called the Maleny Shared House project, this project has been running for nearly 6 months now & has seen some very valuable learnings in that time. The Steering Group has recently decided to change the model from having a head tenant to one where all tenants are transitional. This runs quite successfully for other transition houses on the Sunshine Coast. There have been 6 tenants thus far &  most have successfully moved onto more permanent housing solutions... read the full report
CHASM UPDATE:
The small house project

Help needed!!
CHASM is currently negotiating the house design & will be entering a contract for the purchase of our first dwelling soon. For the build phase we need to engage the services of a building certifier for the dwelling & a builder who can install the piers & coordinate the installation of the dwelling including the utility connections. If you know of anyone who might be available to help us with this work please contact Marg McKenzie 0412 322 103.
Fundraising
Thank you to all the people who supported our April fundraising events. The bake sale raised $470 & Melony Drag Queen Bingo raised $3,666. This has now brought our total to $42,000, which is fantastic. However we still need to raise more funds to reach our goal of $50,000.

Floral Art workshops

Second Tuesday of the month, 9 am–12pm
Valued volunteer Meryl has been involved for 19 years in floral art and introduced it to the Centre about 6 years ago. She said that it is very rewarding to show people how to arrange flowers artistically for their home. After 30 years of being a potter, Meryl has found a new artistic love!
For a first timer it is not necessary to bring anything as those attending will share flowers & containers. Materials to bring will be emailed to you prior to the next workshop.
$5 contribution donated to MNC. Everyone who joins in will go home with a floral art arrangement.

MNC volunteer profile:
Julie Atkinson

Twelve months ago, as a new resident to Maleny, I joined the volunteer team at MNC to meet new people and to contribute to the community. I have always been a ‘people’ person and previously worked for twenty years in Brisbane primary schools as an admin assistant. I love travel, love meeting people and visiting different countries and cultures. I also love cooking and trying out new recipes.
I was a Mater volunteer in Brisbane for two years before we retired to Maleny, and  connecting with people from all walks of life is the reason I love being an MNC ‘vollie’. I highly recommend it to any newcomer as a great way to meet new people and make friends.
Currently seeking volunteers in certain areas including kitchen, garden and events team. Please give Nancy a call for an informal chat to see what we can do. (07) 5499 9345
