pedal RACING team updates

From the President

Hey pedal Racers!  Here we go again…. Have I mentioned how impressed I am with this team and the camaraderie and family that we have built and maintain?  Well, if not, I am mentioning it now.  Last weekend was the Koppenberg race in Superior and pedal Racing showed up in full force. It’s a tough course, almost half dirt with the only heckling spot I know of in a road race.  The race typically takes no prisoners and this year was no exception.  There were crashes and mechanicals and flats and podiums.  What a day!  Check out the road write up for specific details on the podiums and check out Facebook for some great pics of our racers (particularly the 2 Mark’s) and their race woes.

Speaking of pictures, there are lots of photographers, both professional and amateur at the races taking lots of pictures.  If you are going to use a photo taken by one of the professional photographers, please remember to support them by purchasing the photo and not just taking a screen-shot of it.  The images are typically not very expensive and are always great shots!  Let’s keep these guys in the business of making us look good!

There are lots of races and rides happening now that spring is officially (?) upon us…. Watch Strava, Facebook, Team Snap and any other way we communicate to get out there and race and ride with your friends and teammates.

From the Road Leads

There was a solid turnout from pR for the spring classic Koppenberg...the sandblasted edition.  27 of you lined up for this mix of dirt and pavement!  The MM40+4 group showed up with 7 racers and a solid plan for race domination, though fell victim to punctures on this mixed-surface course (“everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face”).  Kudos to you all and thank you for the strong team representation.

Notable results from Koppenberg:
SW3: 3rd Jessica McWhirt
SM3: 3rd Aaron Hugen
MM40+3: 3rd Chris Johnson
MM40+4: 5th Ian Kearns

It’s still early in the Road Cup season, but several of our racers are in solid individual ranking, and we are in good position in several Team Cup categories as well!

SW3: 3rd Jessica McWhirt
SM3: 2nd Aaron Hugen, 4th David McNeill
MM40+3: 4th Chris Johnson
MM40+4: 3rd Greg Bjorkquist

SW3: 2nd
SM3: 2nd
SM4: 6th
SW4: 7th
MM40+4: 1st!
MM50+4: 5th
MW40+: 4th

The key to Road Cup success is consistency (showing up with 2+ racers for as many races as possible) and filling all of the buckets (all of the race types).

With that said, this coming weekend is our ONLY opportunity for omnium points toward the Road Cup.  The Modern Market Omnium is 2 crit races on 2 different courses.  It is important that we pack both of these races with as many pR racers as possible and get those points!  See you all out there.

Have a great week!

The 2019 mountain bike race season officially kicks off this Saturday, May 4, at the Ridgeline Rampage. On-line registration closes at midnight on Wednesday, May 1. You can still register at the race course on Friday from 4-6 p.m. or race day starting at 6 a.m. for an additional $10. We will be setting up the team tent on race morning, so you will all have a place to hang out, keep your stuff, and warm up when you get there on Saturday.

Next up is the Fangdango on May 12 in Bailey. This race is put on by the Rattler Series, so expect a well-run, fun, family friendly experience.http://www.rattlerseries.com/fangdango.html

We had another good turnout for the North Fork ride last Saturday. As the weather gets nicer and the trails dry out we’ll be posting more weekday and weekend rides. Make sure you have text or email notifications turned on in TeamSnap so you know when we plan rides! Also, please indicate on TeamSnap if you plan to race or ride, it makes our job much easier.

Congratulations to John Olson who finished 15th in the 30 mile race at the Whiskey Off Road in Prescott, AZ last weekend. Great Job John!

The Pedal Racing Cyclocross team will be helping out with the  Amy D race on Sunday, October 6, 2019. The Amy D. Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps promote women's racing. The race will be at the Lookout Youth Services Center where the weekly Wednesday night Back 2 Basics races happen in the fall.

We've agreed to help out Lee Waldman (who puts on the B2B races on) put on the race, mostly by providing bodies for course marshaling, course taping/clean up and registration support. Lee's taking care of all the BRAC stuff. We've committed to getting 30-40 volunteers to help out. We see this as a good opportunity to learn the ropes on how to put on our own race in the future. This will also serve as an opportunity to fill your required volunteer team obligation.

More details to come!

Friendly Reminder

Let's remember to pay for race photos. Race photographers like Brent Murphy and Ryan Muncy spend a significant amount of their day at a race taking photographs of hundreds of racers in the hopes of us buying their pictures.

Please don't take a screenshot and post it. Usually, their photos cost $7 for personal use. Please support our local artists and buy the photo.

Volunteering Requirement

All team members are required to volunteer 3 hours during 2019. This can be at our race, The Twilight Criterium, Lucky Bikes, Trips for Kids, trail building, etc.

NEW THIS YEAR:
Pactimo is offering a Jersey for the first 50 members to document 8 volunteer hours. When you've reached 8 hours, please send your volunteer documentation to either Jon Dury (President), Laurie Allin (Secretary), Jennifer Brezicha (Treasurer), or Jessica McWhirt (Vice President).

THE BAILEY HUNDO/HUNDITO MTB RACE
Sign up here:  http://baileyhundo.org/hundo-volunteer.html
Race Day is June 15th, but there are lots of volunteer opportunities before, during, and after.
A number of our members volunteered (and raced) for this last year and had a great time. It’s a super well run event that gives back HUGE to the local and bike community.

THE LITTLETON TWILIGHT CRITERIUM

This is just a quick reminder that we will be posting the online volunteer signup for the August 3rd Littleton Criterium very soon. While we would never discourage anyone from participating in any volunteer activity, especially if you have a conflict with the Criterium, please plan on taking at least one volunteer shift. We need to fill over 100 slots and that, of course, means almost everyone is needed.

Our staffing of this event meets our BRAC requirement for one race every year. Of course, as Colorado’s premier criterium and one of the very top in the Nation, it is also quite exciting and about as much fun as you can have volunteering! Stay tuned, but please mark it on your calendar for now.

Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: When riders auto-renew their USAC license in December, their new club affiliation does not always get sent to us. Also if a rider purchases a USAC license, then switches teams sometime after the initial purchase, USAC does not inform BRAC of that change.  That is why, just about every month via E-blasts, we ask riders to look at their BRAC profile and if their club affiliation is incorrect to contact the BRAC Membership Manager so they can make the adjustment in our database. Unfortunately, that does not always happen.

Riders can change their club affiliation on their USAC account, but that information is not forwarded to BRAC. Riders are unable to fix club affiliation on their BRAC profile due to CUP policy rules,  Only BRAC can make those changes.

Before the first CUP event takes place this weekend it is extremely important that the BRAC database has correct information regarding team affiliation if CUP points are to be awarded properly. Remember CUP points are not retroactive.

This is your responsibility to check your BRAC profile and if the club is not listed properly to contact Yvonne Van Gent (membership@coloradocycling.org) to make the change.

Training Schedule

ZWIFT SCHEDULE

Thursdays at 6:20 PM on Zwift (Labor Day to Memorial Day)

Did you know our team hosts one of the most popular and very best led weekly rides on Zwift? Every Thursday at 6:20 PM our team leads a training ride that usually draws well over 50+ riders from around the world. Only problem... very few participating are from our own team. Please consider joining. The unique progressive format allows for riders at many levels to participate and benefit. Best of all, if you finish, regardless of how long it takes you, you’ll get to permanently keep our team kit for all your Zwift rides. Learn More.

Summary/Recommendations: I would suggest we look at the feasibility of a Tues. or Wed. evening ride starting at
5:30pm or later, ending no later than 8:30pm. Ride time between 60 and 90 minutes. Effort level between 2-2.6 w/kg with potential for infrequent and gradual variations. I am open to exploring a weekend ride as well of the same format and duration as above. I can commit to leading on Saturday mornings. Also should be noted that we'll need volunteers for the ride leader and sweeper lists.   If nobody has any specific feedback on these suggestions and/or no volunteers for the lead/sweep lists then I probably will not take the next step of forming a second ride.

GREG BJORKQUIST

Greg has been a solid team leader for the MM40+4 group this season.  Thanks to Greg, this group has been showing up with the most pR racers each weekend, putting together sound team strategies, getting solid placings, and as a result they are in 1st Place for the Team Road Cup.  He is always available to help the team and is loaded with great ideas.  (Reach out to him if you want suggestions for your race group.)  Thanks Greg!
