CBCA ACT Branch Membership 2019
JULIE LONG OAM - PRESIDENT OF THE CBCA ACT BRANCH

Hello everyone,

I hope you have registered for the National Conference being held in Canberra from 31 May - 2 June. There is a stellar line up of speakers, a bustling Trade Display area and Bookshop and networking opportunities. Remember that it is TQI Accredited for both Saturday and Sunday.

Like many others I will also be looking forward to the National Simultaneous Story Day on Wednesday 22 May. The story "Alpacas with Maracas" by Matt Cosgrove will be a hit with many age groups.

Our annual "Romancing the Stars' event will be held at ALIA House on Thursday 27 June at 7pm. Further details to come in the next eNews.

And finally we are almost set to launch our 2019 Make a Storybook competition. Further information can be found on our website.

Happy reading,

Julie

The CBCA is delighted to invite you to register for our 13th National Conference, to be held in beautiful Canberra in 2019.

The rich and varied program of ‘And Now They’re Laughing’ will highlight the outstanding contribution made by writers of humour to Australian children’s literature and to children’s literacy – and much more.

NCACL Cultural Diversity Database:
An Australian first

America has one. Canada has one. And now Australia makes three! NCACL is pleased to virtually launch our Cultural Diversity Database. This was an 18-month long project involving many people at NCACL reading and discussing Australian children's books.  It is aimed at the very youngest through to those of secondary age. All 340 books feature cultural diversity from a broad perspective. You can search on author, illustrator, title, series, publisher, date, key concepts, Australian Curriculum, the Early Years Learning Framework plus a combination of these. There are annotations for each book.

To read about the background to this project,  Click here. To access this free resource, Click here.  To support the creation of the Aborignal and Torres Strait Islander Database, Click here.

New CBCA Instagram Account

The Communications Subcommittee recently launched a new CBCA National Instagram account @cbcaustralia (@cbca was unavailable). This, along with our Facebook and Twitter accounts, will be used to communicate our key announcements and to share interesting and relevant content with our members and followers. Just a reminder to use the hashtag #CBCA2019 when promoting any events.

CBCA Tasmanian Branch News

Congratulations to the CBCA Tasmanian branch on being awarded a $150,000 federal government grant over the next three years ($50,000 per year). The grant is a partnership between CBCA Tasmania and the Tasmanian Education Department and aims to improve literacy levels in Tasmanian school students through the participation in CBCA Book Week during 2019, 2020 and 2021. The grant will be used to organise promotional and educational events and activities and presents an excellent opportunity for the promotion of Tasmanian creators and a wider celebration of the Notables and Short List.

Australia Day Honours

Several Australian authors were recognised in the 2019 Australia Day Honours List. Jennifer Rowe (AC) received the highest honour, a Companion of the Order of Australia, for ‘eminent service to literature as an author, particularly in the children’s fiction and adult mystery genres’; Alison Lester AM received a Member of the Order of Australia for ‘significant service to literature as a children’s author and illustrator, and to Indigenous literacy', and Sophie Masson AM also received a Member of the Order of Australia for ‘significant service to literature as an author and publisher, and through roles with industry organisations’. It is wonderful to see these people formally recognised for their ongoing contribution to literature for young people.

The ACT Branch website is in need of overhaul and added to the National CBCA site. There is a National Board web person who is able to support and assist. We can offer an honorarium for this process. Please respond to info@cbcaact.org.au with a brief outline of experience and availability.
