Dear Friends of the FRINGE Centre:

The FRINGE Centre has had an active year and there is much more to come in the next months!

At the moment we are very excited about a series of events—immersive performances, discursive workshops, screenings and artwork—which we will co-host next week at the Venice Biennale. ‘The Palace of Ritual’, a multi-medial initiative curated by Annie Jael Kwan, Denis Maksimov, Michał Murawski, and Kasia Sobucka will take place on 9-11 May 2019 at the Palazzo Donà on Campo San Polo. Should anyone find themselves in Venice for the Biennale, please stop by! Among an amazing programme will feature original artworks by our founding director, Prof. Alena Ledeneva—a very special opportunity. Please visit the Arts Territory website for the full programme.
Prof. Ledeneva’s Global Informality Project continues to reverberate and expand, generating events across the globe, including a panel at the 50thASEEES Convention in Boston in December 2018; discussions at the 13th World Customs Organization PICARD Conference in Malatya, Turkey in October 2018; and a launch at Sophia University, Tokyo on 29 March 2019.

The Global Encyclopedia of Informality Vol I and Vol II, which Prof. Ledeneva edited for the FRINGE Series, has passed a major milestone with over 50,000 downloads! Plans are already underway for a third volume.

The FRINGE Series also celebrated the release of its third publication, Francisco Martinez, Remains of the Soviet Past in Estonia, with a book launch and panel discussion on 22 February 2019. The Series has several more volumes moving close to release.

Our major conference in the Autumn was a one-day event titled ‘Protest, Performativity, Post-truth’, examining intersections between the ‘performative turn’ in academic discourse, recent developments in protest-movement politics, and the vagaries of our current post-truth society. The event was co-organized by the FRINGE Centre (Peter Zusi) with the UCL European Institute (Uta Staiger) and the Czech Cultural Centre in London (Tereza Porybná), and was supported by the UCL Institute of Advanced Study. Speakers included academics in philosophy, art history, and sociology, as well as performance artists (including members of Ukrainian Free Theatre), former dissidents, and museum curators.

The FRINGE Centre has also been co-hosting the ongoing discussion series Perverting the Power Vertical, organized by Michał Murawski and Maria Mileeva. The series explores points of contact and conflict between power and aesthetics, with a particular focus on the Global East.

Finally, we have of course continued to meet informally for discussion, drinks, and good cheer, including the now traditional ritual of ‘FRINGE Fries’…
