Welcome to our Spring 2019 Newsletter

Dear Members of the Society,

This month the Brussels region blocked the roll-out of 5G technology in the city. Sadly this does not affect all the half a billion of us living in the EU, just the citizens of Brussels, and the lawmakers when they are there. ’The people of Brussels are not guinea pigs whose health I can sell at a profit” said Céline Fremault, the environment minister for the region.

In the USA Portland, Oregon is at least dragging its heels in adopting 5G, and numerous smaller administrations have resisted. Increasing numbers of scientists worldwide are questioning the safety of 5G – with good reason. A US Senate hearing this February found that there were precisely zero studies showing that 5G is safe. In fact there are multiple reasons to believe it is dangerous.

Leading US researcher Dr Martin Pall states there is “compelling evidence for great harm” from 5G. Swedish scientist Dr Lennart Hardell agrees; “5G might have serious negative effects on public health and the environment”. So what happened to the Precautionary Principle?

That’s the context for our upcoming conference 5G and Health: the Facts and the Risks, taking place on Sept 27th, with a public conference the day after. Both the above eminent scientists are presenting.

The day is split; in the morning we hear about the science – the mechanism of harm and the consequences. In the afternoon we learn what we can do about it in real life – how to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our patients.

This is a hot potato. Book early to come and learn with us!

WE HAVE A NEW ADDITION TO OUR WEBSITE

The Journal of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine Online Archive is live!

“On the basis of research that has already been published, it could be considered bordering on professional negligence for physicians and surgeons not to take into consideration nutritional and environmental factors (as well as genetic, lifestyle, psychological and spiritual factors), in their approach to patients.”
In 1989 the then British Society for Nutritional Medicine was invited by publishers to establish a journal in its subject area. Dr Stephen Davies and I edited the first issue in 1990; the quotation above is from our first editorial, twenty nine years ago. Plus ça change!
We published until 2008, when it was closed down by the publishers in a rapidly-changing publishing world of internet and open access.

Here are 10 highlights that you might want to look up:

-  Essential fatty acids, immunity and viral infections. David Horrobin 1990
- The pill, hormone replacement therapy, vascular and mood over-reactivity, and mineral imbalance. Ellen Grant 1998

-  A clinical evaluation of a wheat-free diet. Gibson SLM et al 1995
-  Adverse health effects of indoor molds. Curtis L et al 2004
-  Multiple chemical sensitivity: Recognition and management. Keith Eaton et al 2000
-  Gut fermentation or the “Auto-Brewery” syndrome. Hunnisett A, Howard J, Davies S 1990

Reduction of chemical sensitivity by means of heat depuration, physical therapy and nutritional supplementation in a controlled environment. William Rea et al 1996
-  Sulphur metabolism in autism. Rosemary Waring et al 2000

Pharmacokinetics of oral vitamin C. Steven Hickey et al 2008
-  The autism epidemic, vaccinations, and mercury. Bernard Rimland 2000

We tried several times to get the journal indexed, and were turned down by the National Library of Medicine every time, on the grounds that not enough of the Indexing Committee gave a hoot about nutrition and environment.
Now, after much work under the bonnet, we are making the entire published archive of the journal – nearly 500 papers – available in searchable form, to members of the society.
Where do you look when you start researching something in our subject area? Medline/Pubmed? It’s limited to the point of bias. Greenmed Info? It’s not been around long enough to develop the depth it needs. Personally I always look in the journal first, although that’s because I probably remember that we published something relevant. We usually did though! I hope and believe you will enjoy using it, and learn from it.

Data is power. Please use it wisely.

Following on from the highly successful classroom programmes on the gut, allergy and chronic infections, BSEM are very proud to be running their next hands on practical training day on neuroinflammatory disorders.

Neurological and neuropsychiatric disease have reached an epidemic proportion in the last 3 decades. Diseases that were rare and 'once in a lifetime' cases in our clinics such as Alzheimer's and Motor Neuron Disease are common diagnoses. The scourge of degenerative and inflammatory brain disease spares no one. From learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorders in the young, to psychiatric presentations in the adult population and degenerative diseases such as AD, Parkinson's Disease, MS, and ALS in the later years, no one young or old escapes. In fact recent research shows that the age of onset of conditions such as AD is coming down with cases now presenting as early as in their 30s. As clinical ecologists and practitioners of Functional Medicine we are aware of the metabolic and toxic triggers, antecedent and perpetuating factors that have brought about such devastating diseases. However, an effective pathway for managing such patients may not be as clear.  On the fourth day of our Spotlight Series we have brought together a group of physicians and healthcare practitioners with expertise in the management of neuroinflammatory diseases who will create a step by step clinical guide to treating neuroinflammation with specific focus on AD, PD, MS, and psychiatric disease such as schizophrenia. We hope you can join us and contribute to the day by sharing your cases in our 2 hour Masterclass.

The last training day was sold out. Please book now to avoid disappointment. We decided against increasing the numbers, to keep the classroom atmosphere and allow our trainees sufficient time with our presenters.

For those of you who attended the Metals conference, you may be pleased to know that the FDA in a recent statement has announced that they will be assessing materials in medical devices to address 'potential' safety questions: 'The FDA is working to further evaluate materials like metals that are used in medical devices to learn more about how these materials interact with the immune system'. This is a great step forward in an area where there has been little if any acknowledgement of a problem. If you missed the conference, you now have access to the talk by one of the speakers, Professor Chris Exley, on the biological effects of aluminium. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSgk5m3tds0

Please also see a further link shared by Professor Exley about the publishing scandal when an article reporting a mystery illness in sheep having been peer-reviewed, accepted and published was then withdrawn without any valid reasons being given. This is yet another instance of a retraction for vested interests relating to  ASIA syndrome, as described by Professor Yehuda Shoenfeld. This pattern of retraction is becoming all too familiar for earnest researchers, scientists and clinicians.

BSEM Focus - Upcoming Events

May is a month of International Awareness Days for many conditions that we know are so often linked – ME, Fibromyalgia, Lyme Disease, EDS, PANS/PANDAS, Autism, Gulf War Syndrome, MCS, MCAS. This year, AONM is holding an event on May 12th, the International Awareness Day for ME, “Multi-System Diseases: Improving Patients' Lives with Proper Diagnosis and Appropriate Treatment Interventions”. Dr. Byron Hyde from Canada will hold the keynote, an internationally recognized ME/CFIDS physician and researcher. He wrote the seminal 725-page reference work on ME/CFS called “The Clinical and Scientific Basis of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (downloadable here: http://wames.org.uk/cms-english/2017/03/theclinical-scientific-basis-of-mecfs-is-now-free-todownload/), and has identified a newly discovered branch of the enteroviral tree called the ECHO-21 Like Enterovirus (ECV 21) as often being a causative factor. The topic of his talk is “The Forgotten Relationship Between Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, Poliomyelitis, and the New Polios (Acute Flaccid Paralysis /Myelitis) and Why it is Time for a New Treatment Schedule for These Diseases.” Other speakers are Dr. Judy Mikovits, Dr. Julia Piper, Dr. Samuel Yanuck, and Dr. Armin Schwarzbach.
