Reflection
Dear Ones…

We have five more editions of Little Things during Eastertide before Pentecost Sunday arrives.  As I marvel at all of the ways, big and small, that our parish is reclaiming our power, energy and identity as the abundant, joyful and called body of the resurrected Christ… just let that sink in… I think that it might be good and right to revisit our Christian charter and road map: The Baptismal Covenant.

This month, the Cathedral will be filled with a whole new crop of teenagers and adults who wish to confirm or reaffirm their faith, as it is professed in the Baptismal Covenant, in the presence of God, Bishop, clergy, family and friends. Eastertide, our great fifty day feast, has been set aside by the faithful for ages upon ages to anoint new Christians through the waters of Baptism, confirm those who want to own the vows made on their behalf when they were young, receive those prodigal sons and daughters who wandered away from their faith and have returned and met with a feast, as well as those who have decided to stake their claim in the Episcopal expression of the Christian faith after having been confirmed in another denomination. What better time for a faith community that is experiencing great growth and rebirth to revisit and recommit ourselves and parish to God and one another through the covenant made with us through the waters of Baptism?

So… for the next five weeks, I will offer my own reflection on each of the five covenantal questions that follow the Apostle’s Creed. I would love for you to join me in this! For those who would like to offer their own reflections, thoughts or questions each week, please go to our Facebook page where you will find my reflection. Add yours to the comments and we’ll be able to discuss, wrestle and discern as a faith community should…together.

Lastly, it has been an honor and a privilege to supervise and serve alongside the Rev. Melesa Skoglund. Her presence at Saint David’s before my arrival in 2017 was such a gift… knowing that there was already a faithful, competent and gifted seminarian here to share ministry with!  It only got better for me personally, getting to walk the journey of pregnancy, birth and motherhood with her – something that most women clergy do not get to experience very often. To Melesa, Erik and Truett – thank you. We will miss you but send you into your new adventure with love, prayers and every blessing. Saint Andrew's, Madison, is one lucky parish!

Happy Easter, dear friends and keep the feast!

With love and gratitude,

Kristen
A Message from The Rev. Melesa Skoglund
 Friends,

What a joy and privilege it has been to spend these last two years with you! It is with gratitude that I reflect on and remember the various ways in which this parish - you all - have opened your arms and hearts to me and my family. Thank you for allowing me to grow and learn with you all during these years of seminary. Our time together has shaped and informed how I will minister and lead as a priest in future ministry, and St. David’s will continue to hold a special place in my heart. Please keep us in your prayers as we move to Madison, Wisconsin, and as I begin my ministry as a priest.

I look forward to celebrating and being together this Sunday!

With deep gratitude and love,

Melesa Skoglund

Little Things at Saint David's
+Celebrating the Ministry of The Rev. Melesa Skoglund:
Join us for a festive reception following the 10 am service on Sunday, May 5 as we celebrate seminarian Melesa and her family’s final day with us at Saint David’s. We will also be collecting a special purse for Melesa and her family- checks can be dropped off to the office or placed in the offering plate (made out to Saint David’s with  “Melesa” on the memo line). Melesa, Erik, and their son Truett will be moving to Madison, Wisconsin where she will serve as Assistant Priest at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.

+St. David’s Men’s Group:
On the first Saturday of each month, we invite the men of St. David’s (and their friends) to an informal breakfast and brief Bible study. Our next breakfast is Saturday,  May 4th at 9 am at St. David’s. Please RSVP to the Rev. Harvey Bale so that we can get a good count for ordering coffee and breakfast food– and don’t be concerned if you cannot attend every Saturday scheduled. Harvey can be reached at harvey@stdavidsdc.org with any questions.

+Join us this Sunday for our First Sunday service at 10am:
Our 10am service of Holy Eucharist this Sunday, May 5th is a First Sunday Service.  The First Sunday Service is a service led by our youth with a Children's Homily, which replaces Sunday School and makes for a fully intergenerational worship experience.  Children of all ages are always welcome at every worship service at Saint David's, and First Sundays are a regular opportunity to live more fully into the fullness that comes with having all ages worship together.
Please join us for this rich and joyful service!

+Reminder:  There is no Sunday School this Sunday during our First Sunday Service.  Sunday School resumes May 12 and runs through May 26th before we break for June/July/August.

+Tuesday Morning Bible Study (next meeting on Tuesday, May 7):
Please know that we continue to be open to all who are interested in going deeper into scripture with friends. We are using the Disciple program, a well-known and respected program that covers both the Old and New Testaments over the course of 34 sessions.  Though you can drop-in, this study is meant for those who are able and willing to commit to homework and regular attendance (as much as your schedule allows).  Those interested in joining or with questions, please contact Kristen directly.  We meet the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 10 am.

+ Three Saint David's youth to be confirmed this month:
Please keep Celia Cooper, Teddy Kupka and Julian Diaz in your prayers as they prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation at the Washington National Cathedral on Saturday, May 11 at 10am.

+ Ensemble du Pain Musical Concert:
Join us on Friday, May 17 at 7:00 pm as Ensemble du Pain Musical presents "Our Lady of Czestochowa: Marian Anthems" right here at Saint David’s. The concert features Polish composers Grzegorz Gorczycki, Paweł Łukaszewski, and Henryk Górecki in settings celebrating Mary, as well as settings of Marian anthems by Poulenc, Sheppard, and Palestrina. The concert is free to the public. Click here for a video from EDPM's concert at Christ Church Georgetown.

+Vestry Meet and Greet on May 19th.
Do you know our Vestry and what they do? Meet with members of the Saint David's Vestry following the 8 am  and 10 am services on Sunday, May 19th to get acquainted, ask questions, and make suggestions.

+ Parish Retreat, September 27-29, 2019.
Save the date for our Parish Retreat which will take place Friday, September 27 through Sunday, September 29, 2019 at the lovey Shrine Mont Conference Center in rural Orkney Springs, VA. Details on pricing and registration coming soon!

+Thank you from the Outreach Committee!
It’s been a busy month for outreach at Saint David’s! The outreach committee is proud to report that our Easter egg collection brought in $1,460 of CVS, Giant, and Target gift cards which have been distributed to Friendship Place. Additionally, the Easter Sunday egg hunt and lemonade stand brought in $65 for Bishop Walker School, $75 for Honduras Independence Bilingual School, and $50 for Friendship place. Finally, a huge thank you to all involved in making Sandwiches last Sunday: Margaret Kingsley Johnson and Joan Townsend for picking up the supplies, Jaynie Lilley and Christine Parker for setting-up, and Stephen Sears who delivered nearly 1000 sandwiches to SOME. Thank you!
