Network News

May 2019

The Discovery Network, a statewide program of the Museum of Discovery, was initiated in 2006 with funding from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. The Network's goal is to make hands-on, interactive STEM learning more accessible to the state’s school children and their families. The Network provides high-quality professional development, exhibits, and STEM kits for its members.

Maker Night at the "E"
Episcopal Collegiate School, Little Rock

Last month, the Discovery Network participated in the Episcopal Collegiate Lower School's second annual Maker Night. We brought our Glow Light Play kit and had fun experimenting with phosphorescent sheets and flashlights!

Students and their families wrote in light and played with objects to make shadows. Some even made shadows of their own bodies on our mega glow board! We always enjoy working with ECS and look forward to next year's event!
Berryville Public Library + Eureka Springs Carnegie Public Library

Margaret traveled to Eureka Springs, AR to conduct a kit training for two of our members. They received our Glow Light Play kit which they'll have for the next three months.
STEM Center at Henderson State University
STEM Girls Leadership Conference

Discovery Network educators took part in a Girls STEM leadership conference last month, hosted by the STEM Center at Henderson State University.  Brittney and Margaret led four sessions on circuits and circuitry for 100 8th grade girls.

The girls each made electronic wearable like a tiara, necklace or bracelet that lit up to take home. It was exciting to see the girls get creative with electronics and gain a deeper understanding of the range of STEM career options open to them.

Blue & You Foundation Grant - Workshop #2 Recap
We held our second and last workshop of the year under a 2019 grant from the Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas last month. The grant has focused on spreading awareness and understanding of neuro-diversity.

During the workshop participants made their own bath bombs, stress balls and rain sticks for stress relief. They also had some playtime with the Museum of Discovery's ferrets, Jinx and Bandit!

Autism in Motion Clinics spoke and each organization took home a sensory toolkit to use at their institution for anyone with sensory issues.

The next portion of this grant begins next month with Tinkerfest at Toad Suck Daze in Conway where we'll be bringing our sensory station and four small exhibits.
UPCOMING TINKERFESTS
It's that time of year! The 2019 Tinkerfest events will be kicking off in just over a month. Tinkerfest will have a presence at Toad Suck Daze in Conway for a second year on May 4-5th. Click here to find more details.

STEM Excellence Pathway
The Carnegie STEM Excellence Pathway provides schools with a process and tools for assessing their current STEM programming, while also creating a practical plan for improvement. Participants attend three one-day workshops, one in the fall and two in the spring, and are able to share ideas with other participating schools.

Here's what one participant had to say about their experience:

“It helps you build a plan, it helps you evaluate the things that you have, evaluate resources you might not know about before. We've learned a lot from coming to hear from different schools of things that they are already doing and things that we can incorporate and change and make fit within our school."

-Kara Siemens, Arkansas School for the Deaf
The Network is currently enrolling schools for the 2019-2020 academic year. To learn more about this professional development opportunity for schools, check out our video or contact Ginsie Higgs at ghiggs@museumofdiscovery.org
The mission of the Museum of Discovery is to ignite and fuel a passion for science, technology, engineering, arts and math through dynamic, interactive experiences.
