STUDENTS SHARING THEIR LEARNING – STUDENT CONFERENCES
69% of our families participated in the Learning Conferences last night. The purpose of the meetings were for students to share - their current learning goals, their evidence of their learning and their understandings of themselves as learners. We want students to know about their learning, to be able to explain it, determine whether they have achieved it and know the options they have when they get stuck.
If you were unable to make it please contact your child’s teacher to make a time to discuss.

THANKYOU WESTPAC BANK

Thank you Westpac Bank for our beautiful and useful table and seats.  Our three tables have created a lovely space to use at break times, and to use as an outdoor learning classroom.  They were also a lovely stop while waiting for our shared learning evening.
Nude Food Cards

Congratulations to Jackson Jenkins of Room 3 who completed her Nude Food Card and was awarded a certificate at the Assembly in the last week of Term 1.
PROPOSED ENROLMENT SCHEME
You are probably aware Schools in our area have experienced huge roll growth in the last few years. Target Road School is one of these schools.

We currently have 398 students with a number of students starting in the next month that will take our numbers to almost 410. With the changes of zone boundaries of Albany Primary School we are likely to gain another 100-120 more students in the next two years.
The Property division of the Ministry of Education have met with the Board of Trustees and explained that our school is a high priority for extra classrooms over the next 2-3 years to cope with the growing roll. In order to plan for this growth and cater for the current community we serve the Board of Trustees has decided to put into place a proposed enrolment scheme.

Target Road Primary School
Proposed Enrolment Scheme
The Target Road Primary School Board is in the process of implementing an enrolment scheme in conjunction with the Ministry of Education Under section 11H(1) of the Education Act 1989.

The proposed amendment to the zone can be viewed on the schools website www.target.school.nz/

All students who live in the home zone shall be entitled to enrol at the school.

All residential addresses on included sides of the boundary roads and no exit roads off included sides of the boundary roads are included in the zone unless otherwise stated.

Member of the community are invited to make comment regarding this proposed enrolment scheme amendment in writing to:

DRAFT Enrolment Scheme
Effective from (01/04/2020
The guidelines for development and operation of enrolment schemes are issued under section 11G (3) of the Education Act 1989 for the purpose of describing the basis on which the Secretary’s powers in relation to enrolment schemes will be exercised.
Home Zone
All students who live within the home zone described below shall be entitled to enrol at the school.

The Target Road School Home Zone:
Starting at the intersection of Wairau Road (135-399, odd addresses only included) and Hillside Road (excluded), travel north along Wairau Road and then continue west (Diana Drive, View Road, Hogans Road excluded) to Glenfield Road. Travel north along Glenfield Road (579- 641, odd addresses only included. James Street and Glendhu Road excluded) to the Albany Highway. Travel north west along the Albany Highway (2-100, even addresses and 1-153 odd addresses included, Upper Harbour Drive excluded). Travel across country to Spoonbill Place. Travel east along Spoonbill Place and then Bluebird Crescent to the roundabout (Unsworth Drive and Greenwich Way included). Travel south east from the roundabout along Unsworth Drive until the next roundabout, from there travel north east along Barbados Drive (Rook Place, Wren Place and Caribbean Drive included). Continue east along Barbados Drive to the roundabout. From the roundabout go onto Meadowood Drive (Cabello Place, Sabana Place and Santiago Crescent included) travel east and then south along Meadowood Drive to Sunset Road (2-188 even addresses only and 1-141 odd addresses only included). Travel north east along Sunset Road to Highgrove Lane and then south along Highgrove Lane. At the end of Highgrove Lane travel across country to the end of Totaravale Drive. Continue south along Totaravale Drive to the roundabout (Sunnynook Road, addresses 174 and above included). From the roundabout go onto Link Drive and continue south to Croftfield Lane and then south all the way to Tristram Avenue and then west back to the starting point.

The area along the black dotted line and within it will be in-zone for Target Road School.
Special Programmes
This priority category is not applicable at this school because the school does not run a Special programme approved by the Secretary.

Out of Zone Enrolments
Each year the Board will determine the number of places which are likely to be available in the following year for the enrolment of students who live outside the home zone. The Board will publish this information by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. The notice will indicate how applications are to be made and will specify a date by which all applications must be received.

Applications for enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority:

First Priority         This priority category is not applicable at this school because the school does not
run a special programme approved by the Secretary
Second Priority    will be given to applicants who are siblings of current students.
Third Priority       will be given to applicants who are siblings of former students.
Fourth Priority     will be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school.
Fifth Priority         will be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school.
Sixth Priority        will be given to all other applicants.

If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth, fifth, or sixth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group must be by ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11G(1) of the Education Act 1989. Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES TRIENNIAL TRUSTEE ELECTIONS
A reminder that this year is the Board of Trustees triennial trustee election.

It’s important to thank our current Board who have worked brilliantly together for a number of years.

Our Board chair, Terry Holt, has brought strong and positive leadership to the Board, focussing us on the importance of a well-planned vision for the school, building the capabilities of our Board and Staff, centering our attention on sound Governance and ensuring the best for our students, staff and learning community.

Terry has been on the Board since 2013. He will step down from the Board this year as his children are now at Intermediate and Secondary School. We are very grateful for his energy, commitment, drive and strong leadership.

Janine Pringle will also step down from the Board this year. Janine has been a Board member since 2010 and has a wealth of knowledge about the school, systems, processes and governance. Janine has been a strong supporter of the changes we have been through. As an acting Chair and a member of the Health and Safety Committee, Property Committee and Friends of the School Janine has shown strengths in many areas. We thank her for her dedication to the school and staff.

The role of the school board of trustees is incredibly important. The board of trustees governs the school, protecting and upholding the school’s mission, vision and values as reflected in the school charter. School boards of trustees put community ownership of their local school at the heart of our education system. New Zealand’s practice of directly engaging parents, staff and students in democratically electing their own school board of trustees is world leading.

Triennial (three yearly) elections for boards of trustees have been held in every New Zealand state and state integrated school since 1989, under similar procedures to parliamentary and local government elections. They involve the second largest number of voters of any democratic process in New Zealand, and the largest number of candidates - larger even than our parliamentary elections. Taking part in this election process puts you at the heart of New Zealand’s democratic system, as well as at the heart of our children’s education and wellbeing.

Over the past three years, our board of trustees has worked to make sure our school provides the best possible education to the children at our school. We want you to think about the skills, knowledge and understandings you may have that could benefit all and consider standing for our Board. We have an amazing, diverse, talented community and want our board to reflect this.

Please consider putting your name forward as a Board member for the 2019 elections.
Contact Mathilda in the office if you would like more information.

Maori Pasifika Accelerating Learning

Over the holidays Mrs Lee was filmed in a short documentary by AUT students Alice Burley, Olivia French and Woojin Lee.  The purpose of the documentary was to show the development of the Maori Pasifika accelerated learning class at Target Road School.  Mrs Lee answered a range of questions and discussed the importance of cultural confidence and a sense of identity for students.  We are sure she gave an Oscar winning performance.
