Another new season

I have to say that I had no idea how much time I was spending in my commuting for the last 2 years. I mean, I know I was getting up early and coming home late with 2 hours in a car every day, and those were good days with no accidents and detours. In my analytical way, I often calculated how often my GPS took me on a different route to avoid traffic, and usually it was around 6/10 trips a week.

Now that I'm back in private practice, every morning I wake up happy that I can do a quick walk or bike to work. I have uncovered so much free time that I have to use to work at the gym, do some morning writing, or sit in silent meditation. The only calamity to this all joy is that I miss the sunrises. I don't have to get up as early (and I get to stay up later at night now and get more fun time in the evenings). On a recent visit to my Tiny Home, I checked the sunrise schedule and deliberately got up early for a morning walk around 5:45am to watch the world wake up. This photo reminds me of the glory of mornings, and I aspire to waking up more often to join in. From a walking path and not my car!

Tiny Home Gathering
Are you interested in the Tiny Home Movement? Are you interested in purchasing your own Tiny Home one day? Maybe you have one already in some form? Or maybe you've got a piece of land on a lake that you're not making full use of yourself that you'd like to share? Or maybe you're interested in seeing how they might solve the homelessness problem in Toronto or up north. Wherever you're at in the process, I'd love to invite you to come out and talk about Tiny Homes with me and whoever else is interested. Please spread the word and invite any interested friends.

The owner at the Bluebird Bar (who also hosts our Death Cafes) is welcoming us to her backyard patio to meet together over drinks. The date is Tuesday, June 4, 7-9pm. We're hoping for good weather, and we'll be outside, so bring a jacket in case the evening is cool, but if it rains we'll carry on and meet inside. Bring your questions and your photos!

4. Buddhist Group Supervision: 1.5 hrs, $80, 10 Saturdays May-August, 3:30-5pm
This summer, I have already begun offering a special group supervision expressly to help individuals connect their personal Buddhist practice to their volunteer or paid supportive counselling offerings. This is a mixed group of practitioners with varying amounts of formal training. After only 2 weeks, it has already proven to be a rich source of learning for all, and it is exciting to share my skills with this group of extended Sangha members. It includes Buddhist practitioners from the Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana traditions.

In the fall, we will set up the first ever Buddhist Contextual Education site group of Buddtist practitioners who are completing their placements at the end of their Masters in Pastoral Studies in Buddhist Studies at the Emmanuel College, affiliated with the University of Toronto. My role as psychotherapy supervisor for them is funded through the Buddhist Education Foundation of Canada and coordinated through the Toronto Centre for Applied Buddhism.

Polyvagal Theory - the theory behind EMDR
I offered a presentation last month at Emmanuel College in the University of Toronto on the topic of Polyvagal Theory. This presentation was part of a day-long event on Trauma-informed Care of Prison Inmates for chaplains, social workers, and psychotherapists. If you read this and ask "Poly what?", you aren't alone. I broke this neuroscience concept down into simple terms that apply to many persons struggling with trauma. It involves teaching clients to know when they are in their "window of tolerance" and can handle talk therapy, and when their fear makes them slip out into hyperarousal (fight/flight) or even hypoarousal (freeze and dissociation).

Private Practice is open again!
PSYCHOTHERAPY & COACHING SERVICES
My private practice is open and I have days, evenings, and Saturday appointments. I am enjoying seeing individuals, couples, and families. I'm open to a wide range of issues, everything from anxiety/depression, health issues, working through fears, relationship issues, LGBTQ issues, and of course anything related to illness, death, & dying.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing)
I am EMDR trained now and have begun accepting new clients specifically looking for EMDR for PTSD and trauma. I also am finding it helpful for a wide range of issues related to anxiety, anger, and overwhelm. I often add a few EMDR sessions to our usual talk-therapy and it is transformational. I am specifically hoping to offer it in coming months for persons interested in applying it to a fear of death.

Teaching Schedule for Awaken in Toronto

We've got things going on every week at the Village Healing Centre, 240 Roncesvalles Avenue, with the following schedule. I will be leading the classes, with support from the rest of the AIT group. All group classes are offered on the basis of Dana, which means "pay what you choose", as an opportunity to put in the bowl what you value and can afford to keep the learning accessible.

1st, 3rd, and 5th Thursdays - 6:30-7:30pm - Meditation class
Topic: The 5 Hindrances to a Good Meditation Sit

Dates: May 16, May 30, June 6, June 20 (Alternate Teacher) , July 4, July 18
Meeting Room: Middle Room on the 2nd floor, opposite the Yoga Studio
Will include a dharma talk for the first 30 minutes, followed by 30 minutes of meditation. I will incorporate some concentration meditation practices, like mantras or loving kindness, with some time for insight questions.

2nd Thursdays - 7:00-8:30pm - Abundance Practices
Dates: June 13 - no classes in July and August

Meeting Room: Corner office #5 on the 3rd floor
Will consist of a theme for the evening with lots of time for group discussion and input. Maybe some writing exercises, or reflection time. Or watching a YouTube video or podcast together, followed by a discussion about how to bring that aspect of abundance into your life. Our topic in June will be abundance of ADVENTURES. Possible future classes might be financial, love, clarity of purpose, sexual appreciation, or other suggestions by attendees for areas of abundance to grow into. This group takes a break over July and August each year, and then resumes in September.

4th Thursdays - 7:00-8:30pm - Death, Dying, & Community
Dates: May 23, June 27 - No classes in July and August

Meeting Room: Corner office #5 on the 3rd floor
Will continue the exploration of death and dying, and the various decisions one makes to prepare for death. The aim is both practical and existential, and is discussion based. There is an opportunity to share information amongst the group if you have your own area of expertise. A theme will selected for the evening, with relevant materials and handouts provided. Sure to be thought provoking. The idea is that the more you prepare for death, the more joyful your life becomes. The May topic will be Home Funeral & Memorial Options, and the June topic will be Supporting the Spirit After Death. This group takes a break over July and August each year, and then resumes in September.

Buddhas In Action - Awakening Through Work and Daily Life

A 2-Week Onsite Course, Cranbrook, British Columbia | August 9-23, 2019

By learning the principles of karma yoga (awakening through action), you can apply awareness and wisdom to everything you do. Cultivating this practice allows you to transform your work, home and city life into a connective field of monastic or yogic practice. Your home becomes your monastery, while your co-workers become your fellow yogis and yoginis.

Our experience shows that blending study, meditation, and what we call “awakening through action”, profoundly integrates spiritual practice with day-to-day demands.

This is a special retreat, in that there are lots of opportunities to interact with other students, but it is not in silence.

Members of the Awaken in Toronto group will travel together to Cranbrook, BC, and attend the retreat together. Reservations must be made directly with the Clear Sky Meditation and Study Centre, and then transportation will be organized together. Students are responsible for their own travel and meditation costs.
