Since Platinum certification was established in fall 2018, six Green Offices have achieved the new level of certification. The Center for Young Children and the University Recreation & Wellness offices were the first to achieve the Platinum level, followed shortly after by the Denton Community office and most recently the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life, Office of Student Conduct, and the Support Group for Dining Services.
Simple behavioral changes are leading to massive energy savings and carbon reductions in research labs on campus through the Green Labs program.
Learn more about Marta Woldu, the bicycle and sustainable transportation coordinator for the Department of Transportation Services in our newest "Sustainability Seven" interview.
Two UMD faculty—Rosina M. Bierbaum, an expert on the intersection of policy & science, and James Farquhar, a geologist known for discoveries on the evolution of Earth’s atmosphere—have been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
Trash to Treasure ensures that students have a place to donate their unwanted new and/or gently used items, which both reduces the amount of trash collected at the end of the year and increases support of the D.C. Metro area through partnerships with GreenDrop and the American Red Cross.
Did you know that over 200 bikes are abandoned on campus each year? Don’t add yours to that pile - instead, donate it to Transportation Services to be fixed up by RecWell Bike Shop mechanics and sold for a low price to Terps next year. Recycle your bicycle!
In case you missed it, the university announced a record-breaking $450,633 in Sustainability Fund grants for 2019, including $150,000 for plastic waste reduction in Dining Services, $61,570 for a stormwater filtration device and $50,000 to offset the climate impact of undergraduate commuters’ emissions.
