U.S. News and World Report’s 2019 ranking of Best Public High Schools recognized several of the same local schools that generally score well on Ohio’s state report card.
With Oakwood High School leading the way for the Dayton area; other recognized top achieving high schools were Bellbrook High School, Brookville High School, Centerville High School, Springboro High School and Waynesville High School.
The rankings work this way — 40% is based on how many students take and pass Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate tests, 30% on state test scores for poor and minority students, 20% on overall results of state math and reading tests, and 10% on graduation rate.

English Language Learning is not exactly what you might expect. There are many myths linked to learning a new language. The Ohio Department of Education in partnership with the Lau Resource Center has an abundance of information on English Language Learning. Here are some of the myths as presented on the website at
www.education.ohio.gov
Myths about Second Language Learning
In the document ESL Standards for Pre-K-Students (TESOL, Inc. 1997), several myths about second language learning are discussed.
Myth 1: ESOL (English as a Second or Other Language) students learn English easily and quickly simply by being exposed to and surrounded by native English speakers.
Fact: Learning a second language takes time and significant intellectual effort on the part of the learner. Learning as second language is hard work; even the youngest learners do not simply "pick up" the language.
Myth 2: When ESOL learners are able to converse comfortably in English, they have developed proficiency in the language.
Fact: It can take 6 to 9 years for ESOL learners to achieve the same levels of proficiency in academic English as native speakers. Moreover, ESOL students participating in thoughtfully designed programs of bilingual or sheltered content instruction remain in school longer and attain significantly higher rates of academic achievement in comparison to students without such advantages.
Myth 3: In earlier times immigrant children learned English rapidly and assimilated easily into American life.
Fact: Many immigrant students during the early part of this century did not learn English quickly or well. Many dropped out of school to work in jobs that did not require the kinds of academic achievement and communication skills that substantive employment opportunities require today. (TESOL, Inc., 1997, p. 3)
I admire the hard work and effort that each of our English Language Learners has put into learning English! Learning new content while learning a new language is quite a significant accomplishment. Way to go!

ANNUAL 6TH GRADE AUCTION
As we approach the end of the school year and everyone is thinking about spring cleaning, please also start to think about our annual sixth grade auction. Before you get rid of all of those treasures consider donating some of them to the sixth grade for our auction. This is such a great event for our kids and the culmination of our incentive program. We try to make this event as exciting as possible for the students. Not only to have some fun, but also to reward them for their hard work all year long!
We are always taking donations towards the auction and are not picky at all about the items we receive. If you are interested in donating any items, we would be eager to take them off your hands. Please send any of your donations to the middle school, specifically room 113.

BOOK SWAP WEEK IS COMING!!!
We need your gently used books.
Did you know that over the summer months, students risk losing some of their school year academic gains they’ve worked so hard to build? In fact, research has shown that over a six year period, cumulative summertime lag can leave a student nearly two years behind in reading achievement skills! For this reason, the Waynesville Elementary Literacy Team will once again be having our annual book swap to get kids reading over the summer and help reduce the occurrence of summer setback.
As you are doing your spring cleaning, please pull those gently used children’s books for our book swap. The number of books students can choose will depend on the number of donations we receive. Please drop books off in elementary office or send in with your child. Book Swap week is May 6
th through May 10
th and your child will visit during their regularly scheduled library time. We want to get as many books into the children’s hands as possible, so please consider donating to this worthy cause.
Your support is greatly appreciated!

THIRD GRADE LIVING WAX MUSEUM
It’s that time of year again. It’s time for the Third Grade Living Wax Museum!
Our third graders were recently given a selection of biographies and asked to choose one of these famous people to research. They will spend the upcoming weeks learning about their famous person, and using their newly learned knowledge to create a postage stamp, poem, summary, and informational report on their chosen subject.
For the “wax museum” portion of the project, each child will need to dress and act the part of their famous person. On May 14 these notable figures from the past and present can be found visiting Waynesville Elementary School. You never know who you will see! You might find famous explorer Christopher Columbus or famous basketball player LeBron James. It’s possible you could run into Wanda Coven who wrote the children’s series Heidi Heckelbeck or Steve Voake who penned the Daisy Dawson series. You might even run into the world famous American Zookeeper Jack Hanna! It is never the same two years in a row!
Please mark Tuesday, May 14, 2019 on your calendars! The “wax museum” will take place from 2:00-2:45 in the elementary school. This is an event that you will NOT want to miss! Come join us and watch these third graders come to life!
