CLA MEMBER MEETING
May 11, 2019 @ 6:30 - Faulkner Co. Library

'Exercises in Seeing'
Suzann Waggoner

Need ways to warm up before painting? Want to improve your perception? Overcome roadblocks in your creativity?

Artist Suzann Waggoner will address all of these topics using 1) Contour and 2) One Line Drawing exercises.

This will be a participatory activity for any skill level.  Bring inexpensive paper and a #2 pencil or charcoal/graphite pencil.
_____________

Suzann Waggoner would also like to remind members to bring items to the meeting that they would like to show at the Master Gardener's Plant Sale Day on Saturday, May 11.  Suzanne will transport your paintings to the show and return them at the next meeting. Or, even better, you can come at the end of the plant sale and take your items home.
Reminder - paintings should be well marked with contact information since no sales are allowed on the premises.

Making a Difference

At its Spring Conference, April 4, 2019, the Arkansas Gerontological Society (AGS) presented the Most Innovative Volunteer Award to Sheila Parsons.

The award recognizes an individual who actively provides volunteer services that are unique to older persons. In 2018 alone Sheila provided 250 hours of art instruction and activities to residents of Stonebridge of Conway. She has been engaged in teaching at this residential living community for over five years. Stonebridge Activity Director, Anita Harris, endorsed Sheila’s nomination and said, “She truly tries to encourage our seniors, not just in art, but in life by allowing that twinkle of creativity to grow with hope and, for those more experienced, by challenging them on a new, stronger art journey.”

Sheila says resident participation is voluntary. She has seen perceptive skill improvement in clients and pride of accomplishment. Paintings are on continual display in the common area.

Sheila is an internationally known artist specializing in water media. Her work hangs in many public and private collections across the state and U.S.

The Mission of AGS:

To improve the options, choices and opportunities of mature Arkansans by convening public and private groups and individuals to share information and increase the knowledge and skills of members. Learn more at argsociety.org

APRIL MEETING RECAP  -  Karmen Barnes

The April 10th meeting was very well attended, with the intake for the Spring Show and the presentation by Dorris Curtis Scholarship recipient Karmen Barnes (pictured on the right with Bryan Massey).
Karmen gave a slide presentation of her pottery and the work she has done this year. The scholarship was instrumental in assisting her in purchasing needed materials for her studies.
Bryan Massey, chair of the UCA Art Department, attended the meeting and was presented with a check for $500 from CLA that will be put toward next year's scholarship.
