Resending in case you missed this....

Hi, folks --

Before we get to the programming, I'd love to share an article about OutCasting published just a couple of weeks ago by the Pacifica Radio Network — our broadcast home!  Read it here »

It's trans bathroom month at OutCasting!  We start with OutCasting itself -- the 60th edition! — which continues youth participant Andrew's exploration of Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in schools.  In March and April, Andrew talked with Paul Castillo of Lambda Legal about the law and its application to trans students.  This month, we conclude the series (at least for now) by interviewing Drew Adams, a teenager who sued his Florida high school when an apparently anonymous and isolated complaint led to the school banning him from the boys' bathroom.  One of Drew's Lambda Legal attorneys, Tara Borelli, joined the conversation, and together they describe the basis of the suit, the realities of litigation, and the impact of the case.  Listen here »

On OutCasting Overtime, Andrew talks about his experiences with public bathrooms as a trans teenager and why trans people's decisions about what bathroom to use should be respected.  Listen here »

And then we have the Ga[y]me Show, in which OutCasters Lucas and Alex take a lighthearted look at LGBTQ things in the news — this month, giraffes, airlines, and presidential candidates.  Listen here »

In these updates, we focus on the programming.  That's our external mission.  But we also have an internal mission of providing a nurturing environment where our youth participants can explore issues that are important to them.  As a transgender teenager leaving for college in the fall, Andrew really wanted to know about the laws that compel schools to treat trans students equally.  It was this personal interest of his that led to the Title IX series we wrap up this month.  We seek the best experts we can find and people with compelling personal stories to tell — and in what better way could Andrew have learned about the protections he himself may need than by turning it into an OutCasting series?  A school project might have been a solo effort culminating in a term paper.  But talking it out with other OutCasters at our production sessions, researching, and then talking with Paul, Drew, and Tara — people on the front lines of this issue — made it come to life not only for Andrew but also all of us and, not incidentally, for OutCasting's listeners.

OutCasting is a very powerful experience for OutCasters.  Here's what one of them had to say:

I've learned that it's OK to be questioning myself, questioning who I am, because no matter what conclusion I come to, there's people around me who will support me and who will have gone through a lot of the same things I have....I realize now that it's an act of rebellion to just exist as we are; it's an act of political defiance.

As always, we're most grateful for your support.  If you're not currently a supporter, we hope you'll consider joining the club and helping to keep our work moving forward — maybe even with a monthly gift that can be automatically charged to your credit card.  Click here to make your donation.

Thanks, and until next month, all the best!
