Congratulations to our Graduates

We celebrated the graduation of 40 more YOUth INSPIRE students at the Walter Nash Centre last week. Students received their The Youth Employability Programme certificates and awards from YOUth INSPIRE Kaitiaki, Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace.

A highlight of the evening was a panel session with graduates, Cheyenne Sam, Angel Dougherty and Cheyenne Hunia. The stories of overcoming obstacles to achieve success in their personal and professional lives was an inspiring and humbling experience.

YOUth INSPIRE Manager, Alison Black, is proud of the student’s success. “Many of our Rangatahi come from complex backgrounds and face really difficult challenges in life,” she says. “To see them succeed and to see the support they receive from their whanau and our business partners, we know that our Youth Employability Programme works. We hope more businesses will support our young people by offering them valuable work experience.”

Angel Dougherty, Excellence Award Recipient

Struggling to find a reason to get out of bed in the morning, school leaver, Dougherty took home the Excellence Award after excelling in all class activities and doing well at her work experience at Heaney on Jackson hair salon. “Working with the team there made me realise that I am committed to finding an apprenticeship and starting my career in hairdressing.” She says.

Tane McGregor-Tuirirangi, Excellence Award Recipient

Tane has been a real pleasure to work with throughout the course, always turning up on time and always ready to start the day. YOUth INSPIRE Advisor, Shannon Seiuli, says Tane has become a real role model and has proved, to not just himself but to all of us, that if you put your mind to something anything is possible. Tane completed his work experience at Downers and secured employment with the team to work on the Wainuiomata Hill Shared Path project.

YOUth INSPIRE is excited to announce the launch of Road Ready Rangatahi – a Driving School Programme that helps young people gain their driver’s licence to get road and work ready.
