CALL FOR SESSIONS CLOSING SOON

The Call for Sessions for the Global Development Conference on 'Knowledge for Sustainable Develpment: The Research-Policy Nexus' will close on 31 May 2019. General registrations will open shortly thereafter. The Call for Papers is now closed, with over 500 submissions from across 89 countries: about 14% from least developed countries, and 76% from developing and transition countries. Abstracts will now be screened by external reviewers, and results will be communicated individually to those selected for the next round.  The Organizing Committee thanks all applicants for their submissions and the overwhelming interest in the conference. UPDATE | RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN APPLIED DEVELOPMENT FINANCE
 

The Global Development Network is seeking to induct up to 10 research professionals from the African, Caribbean and Pacific countries to constitute the research team for the third cycle of the European Investment Bank-GDN program in Applied Development Finance. Selected fellows will be tasked with carrying out 'deep-dive' studies into the results and impact of EIB's Impact Financing Envelope, under the guidance of world-renowned Expert Advisors. Grants up to €25,000 are available. Know more about the Fellowship. See film. The program has received applications from 24 countries, and is currently seeking additional applications from nationals of The Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Haiti.

HOW CAN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE SOLVE DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGES?
 

GDN hosted a high-level, invitation-only meeting of practitioners from government, industry, and academia on 03 May 2019 in New Delhi, India, titled 'Collaborations in Artificial Intelligence and Data.' Thought-leaders from leading institutions such as Ashoka University, the Indian Institutes of Technology, Nielsen, the Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence, as well as representatives of several startups, ministries and state governments deliberated on incubating AI and data for solving developmental challenges. The meeting was a part of a consultation exercise generously funded by International Development Research Centre, under their Artificial Intelligence & Data Initiative (AIDI). STUDYING THE IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION

Researchers from the Foreign Trade University, grantees of the Global Development Network program 'Building Research Capacity in Least Developed Countries', presented research proposals to study the impact of climate change on agricultural production of coffee, gum and rice in the Mekong delta region of Vietnam. Experts from the French National Institute for Agricultural Research, French Research Institute for Development and the French Development Agency weighed in on the discussion. GDN's program supports research institutions based and working in Least Developed Countries to address their needs by sustainably strengthening their research and outreach skills.  

ENSURING INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project 2016 winners Power99 Foundation have been selected to showcase and present their innovative project 'Broad Class - Listen to Learn' for the Fourth Annual STI Forum 2019 at the UN Headquarters in New York.  Power99 has been recognized for their contribution under SDG 4 – ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong opportunities for all. The 'Broad Class - Listen to Learn' program uses radio as a tool for inclusive, holistic and child-centered education in Pakistan. Know more about the program. The Global Development Network's 2018 Annual Report sheds light on how, in line with this mission, GDN has strengthened institutional research capacity, produced collaborative high-quality, policy-oriented research, and put research to better use around the developing world, creating value for every dollar it has been able to raise. GLOBALDEV | MENTAL HEALTH AND CLIMATE CHANGE

Read this blog to know how mental health is affected by climate change, and early life conditions as far back as fetal origins. "Within developing countries, mental illnesses particularly affect the less educated, the poor and women—all groups of particular concern to policy-makers." This column calls for a better understanding of how climactic and early life shocks affect adult mental health, and how policy can respond to these challenges. Read more.
