We are thrilled to announce that our former Operations Manager, Sally Hetherington, has written a book that will be released at the end of May.

When Sally was 25, she packed up all her belongings and bought a one-way ticket to Cambodia, determined to make a difference.  But when she got there, the situation on the ground was grave. Sally had been told that the role she came to play in managing short-term volunteers was crucial to sustainable development. However, what she saw was disempowered staff, children with detachment issues, and an unhealthy ‘white saviour’ syndrome. Sally knew she had to make a big change.

This manifesto has five years of stories that will make you laugh, cry and challenge your preconceived beliefs about the best way to help people in developing countries. It is a must-read for those who want to make a positive change through ethical and sustainable development.

All proceeds from the book sales will be donated to Human and Hope Association Inc.

Next year we have an objective to transform our English curriculum which is based on the concept of enabling our students to learn what to do with knowledge rather than to focus only on knowledge as we believe that knowledge and application have to go hand in hand in order to produce the best possible outcomes. Our education team is now researching and discussing the elements which lead the curriculum to be more effective and its adaptation to our target community

It has been six months since starting our new preschool class. We have 10 students who are five years of age. They are more and more active in class activities and their attendance is much better compared to the last few months. As a result, they start to know how to read and write Khmer alphabets, have a good relationship with each other, and reduce using bad words and inappropriate behavior towards each other.

A new group of our graduate students have started to use their skill to earn income. One got a job at an ethical factory and others have joined our sewing collaboration and set up their businesses at homes. We have started our new term for three months. We have 11 women, six are in beginner and five in the advanced class. We are sorry that one of our advanced students wasn't able to continue to complete the class due to her financial issue, although we tried to discuss with her for the solution.

This year, we have started our mentoring program with our students in order to follow up on their learning and address their problems.

Our sewing business has been running well. We increased our handicraft sales, and we have received a lot of order from our ongoing customers.

Empowering the community with knowledge and skills is an important part of our work. Our staff visit students' families and promote the importance of education to their parents regularly.

We provide community workshops to address their social issues every year such as parenting, domestic violence, health, child protection, hygiene and environment.

We plan to initiate a mushroom farm for our community once we are able to receive funding. This program will be able to move families out of the poverty bracket within a year.

It has been a while since we have shared an update on our Australian fundraising partner, Human and Hope Association Inc. There has been a lot of exciting progress!

Sydney Events Coordinator, Katherine, has organised a very successful virtual ‘Walk to Cambodia’ throughout the month of April, which has raised $3,296 to date.

We have welcomed three new board members, Jessica Nguyen (who is also our Research Coordinator), Simon Matuzelski and Paige Thompson. They have already made invaluable contributions to the board in their short time with us.

Melbourne Events Coordinator, Cindy, is organising a Paint + Sip fundraiser on May 25th. Tickets are available here.

Clayton Utz provided funding to run HHA’s community workshops for 2019.

Our Christmas markets at workplaces raised over $5,000. We are looking for more workplaces to sell our ethically-made handicrafts, so please get in touch if you can help!

Board President, Sally, was named a That’s Life Christmas Hero and was a finalist in the Blackmores Mercie Whellan Women+Wellbeing Awards.
