Darling is Dying

"I grew up in the desert mining town of Broken Hill. Every summer my family went to the Menindee Lakes. I learnt to swim there. We used to water ski there. We’d catch yabbies and boil them up in a 44 gallon drum on the banks of the Lake.

We’d listen to the kookaburras at sunrise. Hear thousands of frogs at night. Watch flocks of budgerigars circle the trees. It was a refuge from the desert and the industrial dust of a mining town.

In this work I have tried to show my personal experience of the Darling, a river I love, and to show how much it has changed in one lifetime. It makes me deeply sad to see the magnificent Darling River transformed into a dry channel filled with dying fish.

I hope to make people aware of the significance of the Darling, not just to the many communities along its length, but to the whole country and help to restore it to its former glory.

We should not allow Australia’s longest river to become a just a memory".
