Westcliff make Promotion Play-off with Final Victory

Westcliff triumphed 33-26 to move into second place in the London & SE Premier Division standings.
And director of rugby Rick Compton was quick to heap praise on his side, despite not being completely satisfied with their defending.
“On another day we might take issue with ourselves over the late points we shipped but at the end of a long league campaign we are happier to dwell instead on a fantastic season,” said Compton.
“We scored more points than anyone else, conceded the least and also won more bonus points. To have finished second is a wonderful achievement for us and is one of which we are very proud. But we will move on to the play-off against Barnstaple of whom we know nothing, but we already look forward to welcoming them to the Gables on April 27.”
First Team Face BIGGEST Game in our 97-year History

Rick Compton’s side face Barnstaple in a promotion play-off at their Gables base on Saturday with a place in National Two South at stake.
And the club’s co-captain Jack Jones insists he is in awe of what has already been achieved this season.
“I’m immensely proud,” said Jones.
“Week in, week out all the lads and Olly (Jack’s brother) give everything they have and we are now reaping the rewards. The best thing about it is that I can share this moment with everyone who is involved in the club both past and present.”
Westcliff finished the regulation London & SE Premier Division season sitting second in the standings, four points behind champions Sutton & Epsom. Westcliff won 19 of their 26 games and Jones would love another victory this weekend in the most important clash of all.
“This ranks pretty high in my book,” said the fly half. “I started at the club when I was five years old so it’s been 21 years now and I have had my fair share of important games over those years. But, for sure, leading the boys out at home in front of what is expected to be one of the biggest crowds the club has ever had, for the opportunity to be promoted to National Two, is right up there.”
Barnstaple finished second in the South West Premier Division, having also won 19 of their 26 games. And Jones feels the clash is impossible to predict. “Without being too cliche, anything can happen in this marvellous game,” said Jones. “We are a group of mates who love throwing an odd shaped ball around and there is no better feeling so we look forward to every game. “But Barnstaple will be a good side and they have spent the two seasons previous to this one in National Two. “They have also just won the Devon Senior Cup so they will be full of confidence.
“But we won’t dwell too much on what we are expecting from them. We’d rather focus on enjoying the day, soaking up the atmosphere and doing what we do best on the pitch.”

Thank You Chris Waring

I would like to advise the membership that our Head Coach Chris Waring will be leaving the club at the end of this season. Hilversum International Rugby Festival

The U16’s attended the Hilversum International Rugby Festival over the Easter weekend - their choice of kit made them the most popular team of the day!!
The Westcliff U13s also went to Hilversum in Holland for their tour during the Easter weekend, some 22 players in a party of 60 people. We managed a draw and three very close losses, all with only one try in it.
We stayed at Zandvoort, to the west of Amsterdam, which is a wonderful beach resort with a massive beach and lots beach bars, and given the fantastic weather, they were enjoyed by parents and players alike.

ALAN GARDNER RIP

We are sorry to have to announce the recent death of Alan, at the age of 74.   Alan was for many years a very influential club member, serving as Secretary for three seasons at 1008 London Road and then as Chairman at Aviation Way in the late eighties and early nineties, at a time when the club’s fortunes were at a low ebb.   A useful player before a serious injury curtailed his career, Alan involved himself wholeheartedly in all of the club’s activities, taking responsibility for several Club Dinner Dances and fulfilling several other important committee roles.  Although Alan was an infrequent member to the club in recent years, we have much to thank him for as one of those responsible for managing the move from London Road to what were then our new headquarters.   Alan was also active as a member of the Old Westcliffian Lodge and the Old Westcliffian Association.  The funeral has been arranged to take place at Southend Crematorium on Monday 29 April at 2.40p.m.   Our sympathies are extended to Susie, Jonathan and Lizzie at this very sad time.
