Dr. Roy Goes to Washington
Postdoctoral fellow Sam Roy meets with Maine’s Congressional delegation
 
For Sam Roy, his second visit to Capitol Hill to promote the work of the Mitchell Center and gather support for the reauthorization of the Water Resources Research Act (WRRA) was the charm. 
 
He first went to Capitol Hill two years ago and had to learn the ropes of what was, for him, completely new and challenging work—and a far cry from his previous training and research in fluid dynamics. He met with staffers from Maine’s congressional delegation for short blocks of time to familiarize them with the work of the Mitchell Center and Maine’s Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI), which receives federal funding through the WRRA and is a program of the Mitchell Center.

Sharon Klein Recipient of Harward Faculty Award

Sharon Klein, UMaine Associate Professor in the School of Economics, has been named the 2019 recipient of the Donald Harward Faculty Award for Service-Learning Excellence. The award is Maine Campus Compact’s most prestigious faculty award. 
 
The Donald Harward Faculty Award for Service-Learning Excellence recognizes faculty who integrate community or public service into the curriculum and work to institutionalize service-learning.

Students Receive Edith Patch Awards 

Graduate student Brieanne Berry and undergraduate Michaela Murray honored, others named Distinguished Nominees

On Sunday, April 28, 2019, the Friends of Dr. Edith M. Patch held the 14th annual Earth Day Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Dr. Edith Marion Patch, hosted at the Raymond H. Fogler Library. The eight students, who have worked in part on Mitchell Centered-funded projects, were recognized at the award ceremony.

Darren Ranco will discuss climate change impacts and adaptation priorities among Wabanaki First Nations in Maine on Thursday, May 16, at 4:10 p.m. at College of the Atlantic. The lecture will be held in McCormick Lecture Hall. Read more...

Undergraduate Award at UMaine Student Symposium
On April 10, 2019, Nolan Altvater, a Wabanaki Youth in Science (WaYS) student working on the Future of Dams project, was awarded the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center Award for Undergraduate Research for his poster titled "Converging Traditional and Western Scientific Methods to Highlight Penobscot Sovereignty." The poster is a collaborative effort with the Penobscot Nation's Water Resource Program. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation.
