The Introduction to Orienteering Clinic  is tomorrow, April 30, at Confederation Park.  If you know someone who wants to go, reach out today to Marsha at info@orienteeringcalgary.ca.  Thanks to Vital M and Emma S for volunteering to help.

Wednesday Night - May 1
Baker Park

Next Wednesday Night event is  May 1st  at Baker Park.  Check out the website for details and to signup.
From the organizer:  "The usual three courses will be on offer (novice, intermediate short, and intermediate long). However, we will also offer a special technical training map for those who would like to sharpen some of their navigation skills. This will be a relatively short course (~1.5km) with some special challenges that can be completed either before, after, or instead of a regular orienteering course. If you plan to run the training map and a regular course, be sure to sign up for both on the right so we print enough maps."

Navigation 101

May 7 - June 4
Edworthy Park

Learn the techniques that will help you be a stronger orienteer, at Edworthy Park, over the course of 5 weeks this spring. Get some one-on-one time with our coaches. This program is for adults, regardless of fitness or experience. You can run or walk the course but expect to be active and outside for the full 75 minutes. The last day will be a regular event with 4 courses!

Forest Training

The first Forest Training session was postponed due to the blizzard Saturday which made road conditions to Canmore very worrisome. Good news for those of you who have yet to sign up.  The first session will now be held on May 12 at Quarry Lake (to be confirmed).  This map is fairly accessible for club members who have only orienteered in the City.  Come out and give it a try.  Sign up on-line (through the membership sign-up) so that you get the training emails from the coach.

Personal Orienteering Coaching

New this year, Foothills Orienteering (FWOC) is offering Personal Orienteering Coaching to club members. Participants will be intermediate adult orienteers comfortable with a running a course but would like to fine-tune their orienteering techniques.  FWOC will provide a coach, a veteran orienteer, for each participant for a one-hour, one-on-one session, either on a Wednesday night or during a forest training session. The coach will shadow the participant on a course and provide feedback based on what they observed.   Sign up through the FWOC membership registration form.

Baby News!

Former SOGO and JDP coach and FWOC club manager, Justine S now living in Whitehorse, has had a baby!  Linden was born in late January.  According to Mom, "We’ve had an amazing couple months getting to know Linden and watching her grow. She’s super smiley, and very easy-going which has allowed us to still manage to get out to a few social events with her, bring her along to ski races and start doing some short hikes. If we have anything to do with it, she’ll love being outside ;).

I hope ... the whole Foothills crew are well! I love seeing photos of club events and trainings, and the SOGO kids out having a blast. I’m sure everyone is gearing up for another busy season and I hope it’s a good one!"

FWOC Casino Volunteers
Thank You!

A big Thank You to our casino volunteers! Everything went smoothly.  The money obtained from working the casino is used for purchasing new equipment and running the SOGO program (creating new orienteers to carry the sport into the future!).

As you had so much fun, we're sure you'd like to know we've applied for our next casino - look for it 18 months from now!
Upcoming Orienteering Events near You!
  1. May 4-5, 2019OART - SAGE Orienteering.   A weekend full of urban adventure running (a.k.a. Sprint Orienteering). What’s that? It’s a twist on running races, where instead of following a specifically marked course, you pick your own route between a set of checkpoints. How you get between each checkpoint is up to you, so it is a balancing act between moving as quickly as you can, and picking the fastest route between each checkpoint.
  2. May 5, 2019Morningside - EOOC.  The first in the NEW AB Campus Series, this forest event is just a 2 hour drive north!
  3. May 18 - 19, 2019 - Sage Stomp - Sage Orienteering.  Join us for two great days of racing above Kamloops on the edge of the grasslands and forest. A typical sprint, middle, and long weekend with great course planners and controllers on recently updated/remapped areas.
  4. May 24 - 26, 2019 - Orienteering Skills Camp 2019 - EOOC / AOC. The Edmonton Overlanders will be hosting the 2019 Alberta Orienteering skills development camp. We want to encourage people of all ages and all skill levels to participate, from beginner to expert. Whether you wish to be competitive or just want outdoor fun finding the controls, this camp is for you.
  5. June 29 - 30, 2019 - AB Orienteering Championships - FWOC.  The 2019 AOCs will be held at Sandy McNabb Provincial Park.  Join us for some great forest running in the Middle and Long distance events and have fun in the Saturday afternoon relay!
  6. September 6 - 8, 2019O-Fest  - KOC. The Kootenay Orienteering Club (KOC) will be hosting the combined 2019 BC Orienteering Championships and Western Canadian Orienteering Champs in the East-Kootenays with races around the towns of Kimberley and Cranbrook.  There will be three races, a sprint, a middle, a long, a model event and a banquet! All races will be on new or fully revised high quality maps with incredible terrains. Open classes will be available on all courses for each race for recreational orienteers.
