Continued Decrease in Crime

Reported crime has continued to fall in West Mercia, conversely to the national trend.  This is positive and reassuring news for our communities who want to be safe and feel safe.

Strengthening Wildlife Crime Team

After listening to community concerns, I've funded the specialist training of 17 additional Wildlife Crime Officers. This is an excellent step forward in reducing the number of people and animals being affected by crime.

Support When You Need it Most.
I launched the Victims Advice Line (the VAL), a dedicated victim support service this month. The new service marks the beginning of big changes to the way victims are supported, ensuring those affected by crime can move on with greater confidence, with improved multi-agency working to ensure they have someone with them at every step of their journey.  This is how the service works...

There are several ways you can get in touch :

  • Call – when you call 0800 952 3000 you will get through to a care coordinator who will discuss with you what you need
  • Email – you can email info@victimadviceline.org.uk and one of the care coordinators will respond to you.
  • Online chat – this option, which can be found here: victimadviceline.org.uk, allows you to talk to a care coordinators if it’s not possible, or convenient, to talk on the phone.
Opening times are:

Monday to Friday – 8am until 8pm
Saturday – 9am until 5pm

This video shows why the service is so important...

Recognising An Iron Contribution

My Deputy Tracey, visited the Ironworks to award them for their support with various projects. They’ve shone a light on knife crime and their in progress memorial for police dogs, is a great way to recognise the animals who play such an important part in policing.

Opportunities In Custody Visiting

The work of the ICVs is crucial in providing transparency and confidence in policing. I know, from speaking to our existing volunteers, that they find the role incredibly rewarding. It’s a great opportunity to get a glimpse into an area of policing that not many members of the public would come into contact with.

Road Focus:  Residents in Crowle, Worcestershire have tried to find a solution to reducing speeding through their village but motorists continue to ignore the measures that have been put in place – ultimately putting people’s lives at risk. As these residents are so passionate about creating a safer community, I was more than happy to support them by investing in white gates at all five entrances to the village. I hope these will act as a reminder to motorists that they should respect the village and speed limits that are in place for a reason. I have also invested in traffic calming measures, such as white gates and changes in road markings in the Herefordshire Village of Aymestrey. Read more about this here.
Additional Funding For Veterans

Those who make sacrifices for their country deserve to be supported so they don’t face the difficulties that all too many ex-service personnel face when leaving the military. This is why I've committed an additional £50,000 to the Remember Veterans project.

Finn's Law Protects Service Animals

I've been a vocal supporter of Finns Law and was delighted when it passed Royal Assent. This will  give greater legal protection to service animals like PD Murphy who play such a vital role in keeping us safe. Unfortunately there are incidents when service animals have been harmed, and should the worst happen, all dog handlers in West Mercia Police are trained and equipped in canine first aid.

We Don't Buy Crime- Have you paid for your fuel? Initiatives that work to prevent crime from happening in the first place are invaluable. That is why I welcome the 'Have you paid for your fuel?' scheme in tackling an issue that has been plaguing fuel stations across West Mercia.
