Travel Time
According to the Fair Labor Standards Act employers do not need to pay employees for time spent traveling from their home to their workplace before the start of the workday or driving home after the workday is over. Workplace can be considered the employers offices or a construction site.
If an employer requires workers to meet at its offices before traveling to a construction site the employer is required to include the time spent traveling from office to construction site as hours worked. The employer would not, however, be required to pay time spent by the employee traveling from home to the offices before traveling to the construction site or traveling home from the offices after the workday is over.
Special provisions may apply to work done outside a normal work area.
