Janusz Korczak Association of the USA
NEWS WORTH KNOWING
Our new Board (Joyce Reilly, Efrat Efron, Max Gilman and Mariola Strahlberg) has been working on the updates to our by-laws and creating Leadership Groups to make Korczak’s legacy wider and more effective in the US. We are also preparing for the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by working on programs with the Polish School in Hackensack, New Jersey; the Viola Elementary School in Suffern, New York; and the Polish Mission to the UN.

In March, Mariola attended the play 10 Matchboxes at the JCC in Teaneck, New Jersey, performed by Amichai Pardo from Israel. The play was presented to students in Hebrew and although Mariola doesn’t speak Hebrew, she enjoyed the performance immensely.

In April, Mariola and Marcia Talmage Schneider were invited by Dr. Mikhail Epstein to present together with the European Janusz Korczak Academy (from Munich, Germany) at the School of Education at the College of Staten Island. The seminar was well attended by students and faculty.
Also in April, Mariola and Erin Schirm met to walk the path of the new Children’s Rights Discovery Trail to be created at the Viola Elementary School in Suffern, New York.

Important! This year’s International Korczak Association gathering will take place in Israel, November 26th-28th. More information will be shared with you as we receive it from the head of IKA, Marek Michalak from Poland.

We would like to hear from you!
Please get involved by joining one of the Leadership Groups. Call or email Joyce (joycereilly@aol.com or 201-213-6294) to get more information.
Share with us your Korczak projects. Deadline for newsletter articles is May 20th.

We are all volunteers—but we need to keep the information flowing, the programs coming, the children served in Korczak's spirit as well as his memory. Your donation today will bring Korczak alive to the families that we touch—please give whatever you are able. All contributions mean a lot to the future of this work!

Although all of us are volunteers, our activities need financial support. Your donations have made it possible to do this work. This year’s expenses include yearly dues to IKA ($170), the orienteering map, graphic design and printing of the pamphlet and trail guides for the Children’s Rights Discovery Trail in Harriman State Park (>$1200), and future expenses for the Viola Elementary School Children’s Rights Discovery Trail and 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child celebration in New York and New Jersey.

Please join us and support our 2019 activities!
We thank you in advance for your contributions.

“Well, there is one thing I know: having a child is a great responsibility, it takes a great deal to deserve the right to be a father and a mother. You’re right: raising a kid is not easy. It involves an obligation and responsibility to the nation, to the world, to God and to your own conscience. That much I know. “
