CWRU Awarded IIE Seal of Excellence
for Commitment to Study Abroad
Case Western Reserve University is helping to increase and diversify the number of undergraduate students who study abroad as part of a global movement.

CWRU has been awarded the Institute of International Education (IIE)’s Seal of Excellence for its strategic commitment to the Generation Study Abroad initiative, which is working to double and diversify the number of U.S. students studying abroad by the end of the decade to about 600,000 participants.

IIE launched Generation Study Abroad in 2014 and now has more than 800 partners around the world.

When CWRU joined the initiative, it committed to increasing and diversifying the number undergraduate students who study abroad by 50% by 2020 and was awarded two grants in the amount of $7,500 each in 2016 and 2017. The Center for International Affairs matched the grants and awarded scholarships to CWRU students who studied abroad.

After sending 655 students abroad during the 207-2018 academic year, CWRU was recognized for achieving its Generation Study Abroad goal at the 2019 IIE Summit along with 31 other U.S. colleges and universities.

“Case Western Reserve University consistently demonstrates a strong commitment to widening access and making international a part of what it means to be educated in Cleveland. Its Center for International Affairs is helping to write the guidebook for us all,” said Allan E. Goodman, President and Chief Executive Officer for IIE.

President Snyder Visits Uganda for 30th Anniversary
of CWRU Collaboration
President Barbara R. Snyder and a delegation of representatives from CWRU traveled to Uganda in March as part of the ongoing celebration of the Uganda-CWRU Research Collaboration's 30th anniversary.  The collboration began in 1989 in response to what was later determined to be the HIV/AIDS outbreak. "No Ugandan had full knowledge about the fast killing disease and many families lost their loved ones, not until Case Western Reserve University came in to give Uganda a helping hand. You came to Uganda at a time of need, thank you," said Vice Chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe of Makerere University, CWRU's partner institution in Uganda. “Our collaboration with Makerere University is growing very fast and its fruits can be seen by the good results it produces,” said President Snyder.

Entrepreneurs in Syria connect with Michael Goldberg's university seminar class at CWRU online

Massive Open Online Courses Provide Opportunity for International Collaboration
Students in Michael Goldberg's university seminar course last semester had 42 additional classmates:
entrepreneurs in Syria.
Throughout the semester, they connected and exchanged ideas via Zoom, culminating with the CWRU students offering business recommendations to their Syrian peers. The collaboration was an on-campus application of Goldberg’s massive open online course (MOOC), “Beyond Silicon Valley: Growing Entrepreneurship in Transitioning Economies.” Goldberg, an assistant professor of design and innovation in the Weatherhead School of Management, launched the course in 2014 as one of the university’s first MOOCs—low-cost online courses available to unlimited numbers of people worldwide.
