2. GrowGood Spring Fair  |  April 27

Who doesn't love a spring fair, and who doesn't love GrowGood? Join us in Bell tomorrow (Saturday) for GrowGood's annual fundraiser at their wonderful urban farm. Here's the info:

_____

On April 27th, we’re holding our fundraiser Spring Fair at GrowGood. Please buy tickets, and please come if you live near enough. If you are reading this from afar, consider supporting the event – and GrowGood – with a donation.

Participants at Spring Fair can spend an afternoon at our innovative urban farm. Choose from a roster of educational plant-themed workshops, including natural dyeing, home composting, medicine-making, pickling, paper-making, and more.

There will be delicious food and mocktails, using GrowGood’s produce.

And we’re having a panel discussion on self-reliance with a great lineup of experts:

Lara Morrison, a founder of Los Angeles Eco-Village
Leslie Campbell, founder of SustainLA
Michael Martinez, founder of LA Compost
Jill Replogle, KPCC reporter who with her family spent a month using no one-use plastic

And of course, everyone’s favorites will be there: the chickens!

All of us at GrowGood feel deep gratitude for all of our supporters: people who donate, who volunteer, who buy our produce, or who just send us good vibrations. And like nearly all nonprofit organizations, we could not exist without all of you. Please come to the party if you can, and consider donating if you can’t. Thank you.

3. Westside Bee Boyz  |  Chicago, IL

Ok, you know I love bees in general, and I especially love when humans help bees thrive in the wonderful chaos of our cities, while at the same time, the bees help teach humans a sense of humility, gratitude, and cooperation.

I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts, Out of the Blocks, and in one of their recent episodes they interviewed Thad Smith, the founder of Westside Bee Boyz in Chicago. Having experienced homelessness himself, Thad knows the value of community and shelter, which makes his connection to beekeeping as a tool to help prison inmates and folks in crisis that much more compelling. You can learn more about the Westside Bee Boyz in this article or on their Facebook page. On their page they recently posted this exciting news:

I am proud to announce an upcoming collaborative with The Department of Cook County Corrections and their Beekeeping Program. Starting at the end of the month, 2 hives are set to be installed to pollinate the food being grown on the property. The farm covers about 2-3 acres of land with the food to be used for the detainees meals. To say I am thrilled to be part of this program is an understatement and I will keep you all informed as the season progresses.

Keep up the good work, Bee Boyz!!!

4. Local Seedling Sales
It's time to plant the summer crop! How fortunate are we to have so many planting/harvesting seasons in Southern California? Support your local nurseries and farmers and purchase your seedlings. Both Fig Earth Supply and Hope Gardens are having great sales this weekend. Check out the Open Silo Calendar for more info, and for a $10 coupon to the Hope Garden Seedling Sale, which is happening this Saturday (4/27) and next Saturday (5/4).
5. LANI Neighborhood Forum  |  May 2
Join us at LANI's Community Forum and celebrate our 25th Anniversary! The Forum offers valuable information, resource sharing and inspiration for individuals committed to rebuilding their neighborhoods one block at a time.

This year I will be a part of a session discussing the Urban Agriculture Incentive Zone with Rachel Surls (UC Cooperative Extension) and Bruce Durbin (County of Los Angeles Planning Department). I'll be talking about the process of qualifying and applying for the Incentive in the City of Los Angeles, but also why the Incentive fails to effectively provide new access to land in our city, as well as some other models of urban agriculture that are thriving in LA that wouldn't qualify for the Incentive. Also, Kevin de Leon is giving the keynote address! Come mingle and learn at this great community forum hosted by the Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative
