Congratulations to the Lake Hamilton Junior High boys and girls track and field teams for winning the conference championships last night! It's always nice to bring both championships, boys and girls, home to Lake Hamilton!

U.S. PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM SEMIFINALIST

Jordan Erickson, a graduating senior at Lake Hamilton High School, has been named one of 621 semifinalists in the 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The semifinalists were selected from nearly 5,300 candidates expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2019.

Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 55th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.

A distinguished panel of educators have reviewed the submissions and selected the 621 semifinalists. The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of up to 32 eminent citizens appointed by the President, will select the finalists, and the U. S. Department of Education will announce he Scholars in May.

ARKANSAS GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL

Six students at Lake Hamilton High School have been selected to participate in the 40th Arkansas Governor's School this summer: Madison Siess (Visual Art), Gabby McFee (Instrumental Music), Elijah Pravatt (Social Science), Molly Sorters (Social Science), Katherine Scalzo (Social Science), Tess Butler (Language Arts). These six students are among a select group of rising high school seniors chosen to attend this prestigious six week summer program.

Founded in 1979 by Governor Bill Clinton, Arkansas Governor’s School serves up to 400 selected students from around the state during the summer before their senior year in high school. The 2019 Arkansas Governor’s School is scheduled for July 7 to August 3 on the campus of Arkansas Tech University in Russellville.

HEART OF A CHAMPION

Two members of the Lake Hamilton High School basketball team received special honor and recognition this past week at the Arkansas Basketball Coaches Association Top 5 Banquet. Malique and Clyde Hill received the Point Guard College Heart of a Champion award. The boys were nominated by their coaches, Scotty Pennington and Jason Johnson. The two players were two of only three individuals in the state to receive this award. Below is an excerpt from the nomination letter sent in on their behalf for this award:

"A single mother of three, a girl and two boys, she often referred to her children as her VIP's. Her boys, close in age, played basketball on the same team. She was at each game, a vivacious cheerleader, not only leading the cheers but cheering the loudest. Spectators would enthusiastically join in as her support for her boys and team spirit were contagious. Her love of the game was intense. On December 11, 2014, these brothers, Clyde (then 14), Malique (then 12), and their older sister Shareece (then 17), suddenly and unexpectedly lost their mother, Vandasha Hill. In the days, weeks, and months that followed, the community wrapped these teenagers in love and support. They continued to attend Lake Hamilton and the boys continued to play basketball. As a senior and a junior now, the boys have played high school basketball together for a little over two years, honoring their mother each and every time they stepped on the court. The past two seasons, this duo led Lake Hamilton to a 52 - 7 record, back-to-back conference championships, and a state semi-final berth. Amazingly, these boys, with the support of their father, step-mother, and community; have been able to continue impacting the game their mother loved while always honoring her memory. Clyde and Malique Hill are true VIP's displaying everyday what it takes to have the heart of a champion."
