ASTEROID DAY HIGHLIGHTED EVENT

NEW DELHI, INDIA

SPACE India held an event at the Nehru Planetarium in New Delhi, India. Over 200 participants joined for an event filled with asteroid questions and answers and a few great costumes.

They also organized an interactive Skype sessions with Asteroid Expert Panel member Patrick Michel.

SPACE India has been bringing astronauts and astronomy experts in-person and virtually to students for years.

GEORGES SCHMIT

Georges Schmit is our fearless leader, chair of the Asteroid Foundation board (Asteroid Day is a program of the Asteroid Foundation).

He is a retired civil servant of the Government of Luxembourg whom he served in various positions from 1981 to 2016. Most recently, Georges was Consul General of Luxembourg and Executive Director of the Luxembourg Trade and Investment Office in San Francisco (2009-2016).

During most of his career, Georges' work focused on innovation and technology policy, economic development and trade and investment promotion. He has contributed to the design and launch of several major Luxembourg Government innovation policy initiatives including the Financial Technologies (FinTech) Promotion Initiative and the Space Resources. In 2017 he joined the Board of Saphir Capital Investment Fund, a Luxembourg-based private equity fund with interests in a variety of both tech and non-tech start-ups. He joined the University of Luxembourg Center for Security, Reliability and Trust as a Research Fellow in March 2017.

ASTEROID DAY EXPERT PANEL (ADXP) HIGHLIGHTED MEMBER

DR. MARK BOSLOUGH

Dr. Mark Boslough is the Chair of the Asteroid Day Expert Panel (ADXP).

He received his BS in Physics from Colorado State University in 1977 and his PhD in Applied Physics from Caltech 1983.

He was member of the technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories from 1983 until his retirement in 2017. At Sandia, he worked on many aspects of planetary impact physics, including Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impact models, formation of the Libyan Desert of Egypt, the 1908 Tunguska explosion, the 2008 TC3 airburst over Sudan, and impacts on Jupiter in 2010 and 2012. He served on the asteroid mitigation panel and co-authored the NRC report “Defending Planet Earth” in 2010.

He was the first US scientist to visit the site of the 2013 Chelyabinsk airburst, as a participant in a NOVA documentary. His simulation of that event appeared on the covers of Nature in November, 2013, and Physics Today in September, 2014. He provided information and simulations of airbursts for disaster scenarios for FEMA tabletop exercises in 2013, 2014, and 2016, and helped develop impact scenarios for Planetary Defense Conferences in Flagstaff, Arizona (2013), Frascati, Italy (2015) and Tokyo, Japan (2017).

He has appeared in dozens of science documentaries and television shows.

The mission of the Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA) is to promote the economic development of the space sector in Luxembourg.
