As every father should know (and he will learn if he doesn’t) every year your child becomes faster and stronger, you get slower and weaker. At some point those two lines intersect – and sometimes in a spectacular fashion.

When our oldest son Andy turned 13 he had a large sleepover and we went to the park to play football. I had coached many of the boys and was still fairly active. During the game one of his buddies went for an interception and my eye accidentally hit his elbow.

All of a sudden I see a bright light and have to sit down. I ended up with a massive black eye – the 13 year-old’s elbow was fine. Needless to say, when we set out for the park, I was not expecting to have a life lesson taught to me. However, I received it anyway.

Life is full of those moments, even if we can’t recognize them. When you discover your first gray hair. When your recovery time is longer than the activity that caused it. When you are limping in to work and your only answer for what happened was that you “slept” wrong.

We are all getting older. Every day is one day further away from our youth. And yet, if we can learn from today, we are one day wiser than before. Paul tells the church in Corinth, “do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” (2 Corinthians 4:16)

Are you being renewed day by day? God wants you to be. “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6)

God wants to renew us. He wants to see Christ in us. He wants to open our eyes to see His light (preferably without a concussion). No matter how old or young you are, you have lived enough to see growth and change.

Who can you share that light with today?
