 Hello Fall 2019! UAB Libraries would like to welcome you to campus! Though we too wish the summer break (though perhaps not the summer temperatures) had lasted a little bit longer, we look forward to all the new faces and seeing our loyal library-folk again. Don’t forget that we are here to help. If you are wondering what kind of help, check out our services page to get an idea. And did you know we have librarians who specialize in specific subject areas? Check out the list to see who your librarian is. Oh! Two more things. Remember to have your Blazer Card on you so you can get in the building, and please respect the Quiet Zones! We don’t want to have say “I told you so” during finals.
2017 Reynolds-Finley Associates Research Fellow Wins Book Award
In 2017 Jenny M. Luke received a Reynolds-Finley Associates Research Fellowship in the History of the Health Sciences at the UAB Libraries. Luke’s project was to further her research into midwifery as she revised for publication her master’s thesis from the University of Texas at Arlington. In 2018 the University Press of Mississippi published her book, Delivered by Midwives: African American Midwifery in the Twentieth-Century South. And we are now pleased to announce that Luke has just been awarded the 2019 Lavinia L. Dock Award for Exemplary Historical Research and Writing in a Book by the American Association for the History of Nursing.

Public Health Information Literacy Certificate Course
UAB Libraries is pleased to announce that the Public Health Information Literacy Certificate Course (Category B, non-credit) is now available on Canvas for the Fall Semester! Led by UAB Libraries Liaison to the School of Public Health, Kay Hogan Smith, MLS, MPH, the course consists of eight sessions (see below) with a supplementary advanced search techniques module. The goal of this free online cou rse is to promote lifelong skills in library research focusing on specific public health research domains and challenges. The course is self-paced, and registrants should complete five of the eight sessions for the certificate. Kay is joined by UAB Libraries colleagues Brooke Becker and Jill Deaver as co-instructors for some of the sessions.
Specific session topics include:
• Library research basics/introduction to medical literature database searching
• Citing sources/EndNote
• Social sciences/health policy resources
• Health statistics/data sets
• Grey literature/test instruments
• Systematic reviews in public health
• Environmental health/disasters resources
• Keeping up with the literature after graduation
• Supplemental: Advanced searching techniques

Fall 2019 Business Research Toolkit Certificate
The Fall 2019 Business Research Toolkit (BRT) will take place from September 13-October 31, 2019. It’s a free, seven week, fully online, asynchronous workshop available in Canvas that covers key aspects of business research. Participants will learn how to locate company, industry, and other business information using free, online resources and databases available through UAB Libraries.
Registration is limited to 120 participants. There is no cost to take the BRT, and it is open to any current UAB student, faculty, or staff member. The last day to register is Thursday, September 5, 2019.
To earn the certificate of completion, each participant must complete and pass all five required modules and two elective modules. Each module takes approximately 1-1.5 hours to complete. The total time commitment expected over the 7 weeks is approximately 7-10.5 hours.

3D Printing Preview - August 30th and September 6th
Stop by the Lister Hill Library 3D Printing space any time between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM on August 30th or September 6th, to see a demonstration of our LulzBot Taz 6, Form 2, and Allevi 1 printers. All UAB students, faculty, and staff are welcome to stop by the space to see the printers and ask questions. The 3D Printing Space is located in Room 115 on the 1st floor of Lister Hill Library, across from the HUB Desk.

What We’re Chatting About at UAB Libraries
Imagine that it’s just you and the computer screen in front of you, and you’re working on a project. You know that you’re supposed to use library resources, but you aren’t sure where to start. Or, maybe you’ve been looking f  or articles for an hour and you can’t find what you’re looking for. You’ve changed your topic five times already and feel like giving up. Or, imagine that you’re studying in the library and you have everything you need for the next three hours on the table: snacks, water bottle, cardigan, laptop. Things are going well, and you find an article you want to read, but something doesn’t look right: Why is it asking me to log in? I am logged in. So, do you put everything back in your bag and walk to the main desk to ask what’s going on? What a hassle! Here’s what you do: Don’t change your topic again! Chat with a Librarian!
Sterne Library and Lister Hill Library Reference Librarians answered 2,600 chats last year. And we’re not robots, like other chat services you may have tried before. We’re real humans who want to know what you’re working on and want to help. The average wait time when you do chat in… 13 seconds. You can ask any question you have: Does the library have this book? Does the library have this article? Help, I don’t know what I’m doing! I’m looking for articles comparing interventions for monkey bites in older adults, can you help? Yes… we can help with that. Remember that we really care about what you need help with. So, if you can’t find what you’re looking for in 20 minutes OR LESS, chat us up! We can’t wait to hear from you!
Introducing the CAS Research Sources and Skills Toolkit
UAB Libraries is excited to introduce the CAS Research Sources and Skills Toolkit. Victoria Dawkins, Librarian for Freshman Composition and subject liaison for Art and Art History, Music and Philosophy, has created this toolkit as another way for students to receive research instruction. Portions of the toolkit can be embedded in a course, used as a flipped classroom exercise prior to library instruction, or your students can take the entire course for a “certificate” of completion.
UAB Libraries Acquires Gale Political Extremism & Radicalism in the Twentieth Century Database
UAB Libraries recently acquired an excellent new database called Gale Political Extremism & Radicalism in the Twentieth Century. This database contains unique items from several different archival collections including the Hall-Hoag Collection of Dissenting and Extremist Printed Propaganda, American Radicalism Collection from Michigan State University, the Searchlight Archive (University of Northampton, UK), and the National Archives at Kew (UK). The materials cover both the far-right and left extremist groups from 1900s to early 21st century and contain government records, campaign propaganda, oral histories, and more. New Exhibit Features Leonardo da Vinci’s Anatomical Drawings
The Anatomical Studies of Leonardo da Vinci, a new exhibit on display on the 3rd floor of Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences, traces the various stages of Leonardo’s anatomical studies and puts his work within the context of contemporary and subsequent anatomical and physiological understanding. The anatomical drawings of Leonardo have been held by the Royal Library of Windsor Castle since the reign of Charles II (1660-1685) and are here displayed within reproductions and facsimiles from the Reynolds-Finley Historical Library, alongside a life-size replica of a human skeleton from the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences.
This fascinating new exhibit can be viewed from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. For more information, call (205) 934-4475.
Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of UAB
A two-part display in the UAB Libraries celebrates the 50th anniversary of UAB with material from the UAB Archives. On the first floor of Sterne Library several cases highlight three periods in UAB’s history: 1969-1970, the first academic year of the new UAB; 1994-1995, the academic year of the 25th anniversary of UAB; and the current UAB during this milestone 50th anniversary year. Documents, photographs, and three-dimensional objects are used to portray these three periods in university history with textual information to differentiate enrollment, employment, student life, etc. On the third floor of Lister Hill Library, additional material also documents the growth and development of UAB. Be sure to stop by and see these displays in the UAB Libraries. Go Blazers!

At a press conference in Montgomery, Governor Albert P. Brewer and members of the Board of Trustees announced a new three-campus University of Alabama System with separate universities located in Tuscaloosa (UA), Huntsville (UAH), and Birmingham (UAB). The Board named F. David Mathews as the new president of the University of Alabama and Joseph F. Volker as president-elect of the new UAB; a search would later be held for the first president of UAH. Dr. Volker officially assumed office as the first president of UAB on September 5, 1969.
