HHS South Students Visit Sea Turtle Inc.

Harlingen South Life Skills class took a trip to South Padre Island on April 24th and enjoyed the sights the island has to offer. The day started off with a delicious lunch at Pirates Landing and then students spent time at Sea Turtle Inc. where they participated in an educational lesson on sea turtle rescue. Students learned what to do if they see an injured sea turtle on the beach. They walked the rescue facility and met Allison, a permanent resident, who uses a prosthetic tail. It was a great day and the students had fantastic a time!

HHS South Students of the Month

Congratulations to senior students, Asa Britten and Alexander Castillo for being selected April 2019 South PTSA Students of the Month. Their dedication and enthusiasm towards academic excellence and their community is truly inspiring. May they achieve success in their future endeavors. They are a Step Above!

AP Science Students Give Back 

The AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science & Landscaping Classes conducted field sampling & data collection at Estero Llano Grande State Park on Friday, April 12th. The AP Science Club & Pre-AP Physics students recently volunteered time collecting trash at Texas General Land Office Adopt a Beach statewide beach clean-up on Saturday, April 13th. Students in these classes continue to gain real world experience and contribute their time and effort toward community service. Great work students and teachers!

HHS South Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Mathematics teacher Mr. Paul Tyre for being named HHS South's 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year! Thank you for your hard work and dedication to South students!

HHS South Mighty Hawk Band Earn Sweepstakes

For the first time in school history, the MHB sent four concert bands to the 2019 UiL Concert and Sight-reading Evaluation, and all four bands made sweepstakes! This is the highest rating a band can attain from judges. Twenty three judges all agreed that the MHB was indeed A Step Above.
Congratulations to our teachers for devoting their careers to the success of our HCISD instrumental music students (Laura Benavides, Jose Garcia, Raul Liendo, Richard DeLaRiva, Veronica Villegas).  A huge thank you to all our administrators, teachers and parents that keep our machine running smoothly.

Mighty Hawk Indoor Percussion Ensemble Competes in TCEA Championship

The Mighty Hawk Indoor Percussion Ensemble a competed at the TECA Indoor Percussion Championships in Calallen, TX and placed 7th. This is the first time in school history that a percussion ensemble like this has existed, and they competed at a high level representing Harlingen South and our band program with HAWK PRIDE! Congratulations!

HHS South Student Student, Ryan Cortez, Signs Letter of Intent

HHS South senior, Ryan Cortez, recently signed his letter of intent to participate in football at Texas Lutheran University. Texas Lutheran University is a NCAA Division III school located in Seguin, Texas and competes in the American Southwest Conference. Cortez plans to major in kinesiology. Congratulations, we are proud of you!

HHS South Seniors Recieve Texas Workforce Training

Twelve senior students were given the opportunity to complete a resume and job applications and get real life experience interviewing for jobs through the Texas Workforce Commission Vocational Adjustment Training. South students worked efficiently and gained necessary skills to help them transition into the workforce.

HHS South Students Shine at Digital Learning EXPO

HHS South students took part in the HCISD Digital Learning Showcase on April 25th at Dr. Cano Freshman Academy.  Students highlighted aspects of Robotics, Green Power Car, AP Computer Science Principles, Raspberry Pi, Audio Visual Production and the HoloLens. Thank you to South Teachers, Mr. Mendez, Mr. Garza, Mr. Contreras, Mr. Torres and Mr. Lopez for all that you do with your students. Hawk Pride, A Step Above!
