In our yoga practice and as of much of life it is about finding a balance, a path through the middle. As many of you know there are many paths in yoga to the same goal of self realisation and freedom, learning to be responsive and receptive to what we need is a large part of this journey. Whether practicing a flowing practice or a more still, restorative practice it is neither right or wrong, but a learning to pay attention and awareness to our own energies. This balance between fluidity and holding can be seen in the yin-yang principles using the analogy of the feminine energy being water, ebbing and flowing, but also the need for a masculine influence like the banks of a river, contained and steady. To learn to work with these energies is a continual playing with balance in everything we do. Are we always pushing to the next edge, the next thing or can we find a balance in softening and unfolding to what is next without fear of it all falling apart.
The yama Aparigraha means "non-grasping" the balance of kindness, over ambition and achieving, of effortless effort. As we come more awareness to our own need for fluidity and containment, movement and stillness it opens us up finding balance in everything we do.
