Hello and Welcome to Term 2 - Monday 29 April to Friday 5 July.  As our region heads into winter our focus shifts to winter planting.  Our community planting days will happen in June and July, with the first public planting event on 1 June in Waitangi Regional Park - keep an eye out for more details.

Earth Day 2019 was celebrated in April and next year marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. You might like to start thinking about how you can take part - check out their website. Also in April was the release of David Attenborough's latest narration of Our Planet now showing on Netflix - the link takes you to the trailer.

School Strike 4 Climate - put together by Enviroschools Wellington - a very inspiring read. David Attenborough would be impressed!

Youth Environment Council

HB YOUTH ENVIRONMENT COUNCIL (YEC)
Check out the new logo for 2019.  Created by one of the clever members of the team, Ramanjoot Dhillan a student at Hastings Girls'. This new logo will be on the front of the groups t-shirts. The logo below will don the back.

The first YEC planned event is happening in Youth Week and is a beach clean-up on Marine Parade.  Starting behind Ocean Spa at 4 pm on Friday 24 May.  Everyone is welcome to join in.  You can also register your interest on the YEC Facebook page.

Enviroschools

Cross Pollination was our theme - meet the stinger sisters from Hawke's Bay
During the school holidays, the school facilitation team and I spent the day in Palmerston North with our counterparts from Taranaki, Wellington, Manawatu and Gisborne. It was a great opportunity to network and share with our colleagues.

Each region had an opportunity to share their mahi and ideas. It was a really worthwhile day and we have already offered to host the next inter-regional hui here in Hawke's Bay.

Who we like

Heretaunga Free Kindergarten Association - Professional Learning Week
It was a great privilege to represent Enviroschools on Thursday 18 April as part of the HFKA professional learning week for their teachers.

My presentation kicked off an "Enviroshools" focussed day which also included Marion Dekker from Inspired Kindergartens in Tauranga.

Several of the teaching teams also shared their Enviroschools mahi with the 80 teachers present. It is wonderful to see how this kaupapa is embraced within this organisation. Special thanks to Fiona, Kaye and Shellee.

Where we like

Tutaekuri River at Puketapu
It was a perfect afternoon on Thursday 11 April for our first Connected to Nature teacher workshop.  I am already receiving requests to borrow the SHMAK kits. It's great to see more of our kids learning about the health of their streams and rivers.

The second in the series is happening on Thursday 9 May at Kohupatiki Marae. The topic is Matariki. These are run by the Regional Council, Enviroschools and Cape to City. They offer a mix of opportunities for teachers to gain new knowledge and skills. Visit the Regional Council website to find out more.

What we like

A branch has recently been established here in Hawke's Bay.  If you would like to find out more information and volunteer for events follow their Facebook page.

Their mission statement reads Our Seas Our Future (OSOF) aims to protect New Zealand’s coastal and marine ecosystems through advocacy, education, and environmental stewardship, ensuring that they are managed sustainably and protected for future generations.
One of their youngest volunteers taking part in a Seaweek Clean Up at Haumoana.

Primary Science Week 13 – 17 May 2019
Elements Matter

The theme for 2019 is the Periodic Table,  as 2019 is also  the International Year of the Periodic Table. Go to the Primary Science Week page to see how you can be involved along with activities and ideas for your class.

Looking ahead

Outdoor Classroom Day - Thursday 23 May 2019

I hope we can get some Hawke's Bay schools to join in this year.  Check out their website for resources and ideas.
