PROPOSED CLUB NAME CHANGE
At our April general meeting this past Saturday, a motion was made to change the name from Sharpstown Democrats to Southwest Democrats. As this is a change to our bylaws, the motion will not be voted on until our next general meeting, currently scheduled for June 22nd.

During the 2018 election cycle, the Sharpstown Democrats stepped up and did tremendous work getting Democrats elected up and down the ballot. Sharpstown did this by working far beyond the area known as 'Sharpstown' and knocking on doors in areas like Fondren Southwest, Braeburn Valley, Maplewood, and Westbury. But we also did lit drops in Chinatown, Gulfton, and Westchase. Our membership has grown as a result of increased activism. This is the 15th anniversary of the Sharpstown Democrats. We are preparing to celebrate that milestone in the fall, but we must also accept that our inclusive nature must reflect our outreach, our membership, and our area.

Sharpstown sits in the middle of the Southwest Freeway. It helped define suburban Houston. That won't change. We are in fact, the Southwest Democrats. We come from all over the region and that is reflected in how we worked in 2018.

To go along with the change in our club's name, we are also expanding our GOTV footprint. The area we will be focusing on for upcoming elections is shown in this map:

The precincts include: 8, 22, 256, 284, 291, 296, 297, 311, 315, 335, 345, 359, 384, 425, 426, 427, 430, 431, 489, 490, 507, 525, 554, 555, 565, 566, 567, 638, 652, 685, 693, 754, 829, 869, 938, 952, 985, 986, 1002.

The final vote on the motion will take place at our June 22nd general meeting (we are currently working on a location--Bayland is unavailable). We encourage all members to plan on attending this meeting so that they will have a voice in the future of our club.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about this proposal, please email us at sharpstowndemocrats@gmail.com.
RESOLUTION AGAINST STATE TAKEOVER OF HISD
At our April 27th meeting, Sharpstown Democrats voted unanimously to endorse a resolution opposing the takeover of the Houston Independent School District by the State of Texas (via the Texas Education Agency). We encourage everyone to read the resolution itself and, if you agree, add your name and support to this resolution HERE.
TWO NEW CLUB POLICIES
In order to clarify how our club interacts with candidates running for office and our use of social media, the executive committee recently drafted two policies. These policies are simply meant to clarify the bylaws in specific instances and should be reevaluated annually. If you have any questions or concerns about these policies, please feel free to email us at sharpstowndemocrats@gmail.com.

If you would like to read the policies, you may do so at the following links:
