Prohibition of heroin does not prevent all use of heroin, but very few people would say therefore that is a failure, and heroin should be legalized and controlled by some other means. All one can reasonably expect from prohibition of any undesirable behavior is that it will substantially reduce the frequency and intensity of that behavior, to the net benefit of society.” Harold Kalant MD PhD.

Drinking one bottle of wine a week is as cancer-causing as smoking up to ten cigarettes during the same time period, a new study claims.
British researchers found that downing a weekly bottle of vino is on par with smoking five cigarettes for men and 10 cigarettes for women, according to the study, published Thursday in the journal BMC Public Health.
In total, the wine consumption increases a man’s “lifetime cancer risk” by 1 per cent and woman’s by 1.4 per cent, according to authors of the study, who crunched UK health and population data.

Australians have access to mass amounts of potent drugs online, equivalent to "billions of doses" every day, according to a new study from The Australian National University (ANU).
The report found "alarming" amounts of synthetic opioids such as fentanyl and carfentanil available on the dark web.  Carfentanil is not for human use and was originally designed to sedate elephants.

The drug also alleviated his anxieties about having sex as an HIV positive man. "The beauty of crystal meth was it just took that away," he said."I was still having safe sex but it took away that little bit of me that was thinking, 'There's an element of me that's just tainted.'"
Dr Ezard said that long-term ice users typically experienced mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

Chris Evans on Retiring from Weed!

"I've chilled out on weed. I used to love it, but now I think it's the one thing that gets in my way," he admitted. Evans further opened up about the effects weed has had on his productivity. "It zaps your motivation. I think apathy kind of bleeds in, and you start to think, 'Well, I'm not apathetic, I just don't feel like doing that.' And it's like, no—you would feel like doing that if you weren't stoned. And, you know—I'm 37. I can't be smoking weed all the time. That's crazy," he said.

Unintentional Pediatric Marijuana Exposures Prior to and After Legalization and Commercial Availability of Recreational Marijuana in Washington State

Abstract

Background: Washington State was one of the first states to legalize recreational marijuana. Increased availability of marijuana may result in more unintentional pediatric exposure, which often presents as altered mental status with
unknown cause.
Conclusion: Reported unintentional pediatric marijuana exposure has increased in the state of Washington since recreational marijuana was legalized. As marijuana becomes more available, clinicians should be aware of the risk of unintentional pediatric marijuana exposure, and this should inform lawmakers regarding regulations around childhood exposure to marijuana.

In 1997, The Independent newspaper launched a campaign to decriminalise the drug. If only we had known then what we can reveal today...

(This was 12 years ago…it’s even worse now!!!)
Record numbers of teenagers are requiring drug treatment as a result of smoking skunk, the highly potent cannabis strain that is 25 times stronger than resin sold a decade ago.
More than 22,000 people were treated last year for cannabis addiction - and almost half of those affected were under 18. With doctors and drugs experts warning that skunk can be as damaging as cocaine and heroin, leading to mental health problems and psychosis for thousands of teenagers, The Independent on Sunday has today reversed its landmark campaign for cannabis use to be decriminalised.
"Society has seriously underestimated how dangerous cannabis really is," said Professor Neil McKeganey, from Glasgow University's Centre for Drug Misuse Research. "We could well see over the next 10 years increasing numbers of young people in serious difficulties."

Opioid and Cannabis Co-Use among Adults with Chronic Pain

Relations to Substance Misuse, Mental Health, and Pain Experience - Journal of Addiction Medicine: doi: 10.1097/ADM.0000000000000493
Results: Results suggest that, compared to opioid use alone, opioid and cannabis co-use was associated with elevated anxiety and depression symptoms, as well as tobacco, alcohol, cocaine, and sedative use problems, but not
pain experience.
Conclusions: These findings highlight a vulnerable population of polysubstance users with chronic pain, and indicates the need for more comprehensive assessment and treatment of chronic pain.

Surprising truths about legalizing cannabis...

FENCE BUILDER – Summer Edition 10,

Volume 2, Christmas 2018

“Most people have been conned into using the word ‘overdose’ regarding illicit drugs! No such thing! Why? Because it clearly implies there is a 'safe' dose which can be taken - and everyone knows that's a lie. The same goes for the words 'use' and abuse'. Those terms can only be applied to prescribed pharmaceuticals because they have a prescribed safe dose. I have asked each jurisdiction in Australia if the legal amount of alcohol when driving, up to 0.49, is considered safe for driving. All said no - they would not state that!”
