Blast off to summer with A Universe of Stories
15th Annual Summer Reading Kick-Off
Thursday, May 16, from 6 pm - 8 pm at the Greenup Branch.

This is a fun, FREE family night with inflatables, food, prizes, live local music, and prizes including a Kindle Fire for each age group, and a Chromebook in conjunction with our 50th anniversary. To be eligible, names must be submitted 7:15 pm. Skip the lines with Fast Pass registration which begins May 1 at all branches. Outdoor activities begin at 5 pm for the Fast Pass holders and the kitchen will open at 5:30 pm. Registration for non-Fast Pass holders will be at 6 pm inside the library. Contact your local GCPL branch for more information.

Circulating Board Games

The Greenup Branch is now circulating board games. Currently, the selection is limited to six board games and three card games but with expected donations, we hope that will change very soon. Until our collection is a bit bigger we are limiting checkout to one game per family.

Stanley Ramey Honored

AARP and the IRS presented an award to Stan Ramey for 30 years of voluntary service for an IRS tax preparation program they sponsor. Stan is 92 years old and a resident of Wurtland. After retiring as principal of Wurtland and Fairview school, his volunteer work was one of his many “jobs.” Early training for the AARP program in 1985 with Will Haas in Ashland was his start. Stan says that former director Dorothy Griffith supported the program as it became available in Greenup County and previously all three branches were often sites for the volunteers.  Over the years the number of volunteers decreased so that only one site is now available and is located at the Greenup branch. Stan began teaching in Pulaskie County before he came home to Greenup County in 1955 when nine new schools were built. Thank you, Stan!

Geneology

Start with charts and questions: We’re going old school! This class is geared toward the person that knows nothing about how to start working in genealogy. Our plan is to teach people the way Dorothy, our former director, taught our current genealogist expert Vicki Evans. Old school, no computers for this one.

Digital Spotlight

Enjoy best-selling and classic eBooks, digital audiobooks, magazines and streaming video available 24/7 from the library’s digital collection, kyunbound.overdrive.com/boone-greenup/content or by downloading Libby, the one-tap reading app from your phone or tablet.

This service, powered by OverDrive, is free with your library card and there are no late fees!

If there is any aspect of the American tendency to put everything on wheels that is any more welcome than the bookmobile, we just don’t know what it is.

This photo of the Greenup County Public Library’s new bookmobile appeared in The Daily Independent February 23, 1969.

In the picture are youthful library patrons Janci Bridgeman, Kim Rosenthal, Kim Howard, Keith Howard, Kevin Sloas and Kelly Sloas. Also pictured are library board chair Charles E. Sloas and Flatwoods Lions Club president Rev. Ray Rosenthal. The club spearheaded the drive to establish county-wide library service.
