In conjunction with the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and Meals on Wheels ETC., Seminole County Legal Aid will be hosting a free seminar for the Senior Population. The topic of the seminar will be “Scams and Fraud targeted at the Senior Population” and the seminar will be presented by Lenora Spence from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. It will be located at 200 N Triplet Dr. in Casselberry, FL on May 14, 2019 beginning at 10:30 AM.

Upselling on Cars

This past month, April, was National Car Care Month. The newsletter of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services presented some important information for car owners. One of the things that they warned about was "upselling." Often, when car owners take their vehicles into a dealership or a mechanic for regular maintenance and repairs, they are told that the car needs a lot more fixed than what was previously expected. While issues certainly do come up, this may just be the mechanic "upselling." For example, a mechanic may try to tell you that you have a dirty air filter, need premium oil, need an engine flush, or that the oil on your car needs to be changed more often. FDACS recommends that car owners consult the manufacturer's recommendations that can be found in an owner's manual before they consider these options. The owner's manual may not recommend the type of oil that the mechanic is talking about, and many people will find that it is actually quite simple to change an air filter on their own to avoid a hefty charge. Additionally, as long as a car is regularly maintained, en engine flush should be entirely unnecessary and most vehicle manufacturers will recommend that a car should receive an oil change about every 5,000 miles.

Minor Home Repair Program

 If your home is in need of repairs that are threatening the safety of those who live in it, Seminole County may be able to provide assistance. For indigent homeowners, Seminole County has created the Minor Home Repair Program which allows homeowners with a total household income at or below 80% of the Area Median Income. The homeowner must also be primarily living in the home that needs repairs. If a person qualifies for this grant, they will be eligible to do any roofing, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work or improvements for the home's accessibility for the owners. Tech Express: Going Beyond Your Technical Certificate or Apprenticeship Program

Tech Express is a partnership between Orange Technical College, Osceola Technical College and Valencia that helps make it easier for those receiving a technical program to obtain a higher degree at Valencia College. Those that receive a technical certificate or completed an apprenticeship program from Orange Technical College or Osceola College can now have a smooth transition into Valencia College to receive a college degree. The credits you received in completing an approved technical certificate or apprenticeship programs can be applied to one of over 30 different A.S. degree programs at Valencia College. After receiving your approved technical certificate or completion of an approved apprenticeship program, you have 3 years to take action to participate in Tech Express. Now, you can earn a technical certificate or complete an apprenticeship program to enter the work force and make the decision to further your education by earning a college degree utilizing credits you have already obtained previously for you technical certificate or apprenticeship program.
How does Tech Express work?

Meet with Tech Express advisor on your campus to review program requirements and process for receiving credit

Complete approved technical certificate that is eligible for award of credit

Meet requirements stated on articulation agreement

Enroll at Valencia and register for at least one course linked to your technical program

Submit all documentation required for award of credit

Receive anywhere from 3 to 27 credits (depending on the articulation agreement)

Early Learning Coalition of Seminole

 The Early Learning Coalition of Seminole (ELCS) looks to prepare the young children of Seminole County for the schooling system through providing the clearest and most helpful information on child care services and early learning (before kindergarten). ELCS’s goals are to raise the quality of services that aid in school readiness, promote awareness for important aspects of early learning, award scholarships to low-income families for child care centers, and increase enrollment in the ELCS Voluntary Pre-kindergarten program for four-year old children.
Early Learning Coalition has identified five areas required for children to be prepared for schooling: “children’s health and well-being, social and emotional development, approaches to learning, language development, general knowledge about the world around them”. ELCS believes that if these five criteria are met by a child before entering kindergarten, then that child will be able to find success in school.
ELCS helps parents identify and evaluate child care providers and resources available to them in the area. Parents can use these resources to assess their options and find the best fit for their child. ELCS encourages parents of disabled children to put their children in an inclusion program. This belief is supported by the Inclusion Specialist on staff at ELCS, whom is committed to helping parents of disabled children navigate the early learning and development process.
ELCS also uses its resources to train child care providers. This includes a three-hour, in-person course on “Standards for Four-Year-Olds” provided through the Department of Children and Families and various online “Teacher Toolkits”. For more information, please visit their website.
