APRIL NEWSLETTER

CONNECTING ARTS & SUSTAINABILITY IN SCOTLAND

April powers

Hello and welcome to the April newsletter. Before we start, the First Minister of Scotland declared a Climate Emergency at the weekend. Just dwell on that for a moment, what it means we'll wait and see but what's clear is that the 'Overton Window' is shifting. And that just so happens to be the topic of Ben's latest blog!

This month's top story is the announcement of a very exciting new partnership with Good Energy to help support Scotland's cultural sector to go green! If you're working in an arts organisation make sure to take a look at the story and see how you can benefit from this new collaboration.

Right then, let's power on!

Our News

Good Energy partnership to help Scottish cultural sector go green!

We're delighted to announce a new partnership with renewable energy provider Good Energy to develop knowledge, resources and green energy opportunities for the Green Arts community. Matched pound-for-pound by the Culture & Business Fund Scotland, the partnership will enable the design and creation of skills workshops and new online resources for the sector to empower and support Green Champions working across theatre, dance, music, literature, visual arts, screen, and the creative industries. Through all this we'll be helping to upskill the Scottish cultural sector to tackle the climate crisis!

Shape these new resources to help you achieve your sustainability aims by taking part in the 'Renewable Energy in the Cultural Sector' survey (and get the chance to win a £100 voucher). As part of the partnership we're putting on FREE 'Powering the Green Arts' workshops with Good Energy in Glasgow on 12 June and Edinburgh on 13 June to help you make informed decisions about your energy use and supply.

Ben's Strategy Blog: What exactly is the Overton Window?

"It has felt a funny couple of weeks here at Creative Carbon Scotland HQ. For the first time in our eight-year existence the climate crisis has been top of the agenda in the news: everyone’s been talking about Extinction Rebellion and the idea of the UK getting to zero-carbon by 2025."

Ben's latest blog looks into the shifting Overton Window.

Guest Blog: I CAN'T WAIT TO DRIVE A CAR!

..."It was a much needed jolt to my naive thinking that these young cyclists might not be interested in cars. I remember looking out at the streaming traffic on Victoria Road behind them as we chatted and it hit me like a brick that of course they want to drive."

The fourth in a series of blogs from playwright Lewis Hetherington about his work as embedded artist with Glasgow cycling charity Bike for Good.

The World's newest climate activists

"With a warming climate threatening the value of loans, insurance, industries, and whole economies, those banks say doing nothing is not an option."

Not yet doomed

An Orchestra in Sweden that's putting on "the world's first sustainable season" will see no musicians or conductors travelling by air. Ireland's National Folk Theatre has slashed its carbon footprint by 41% just since 2016. They are examples from the arts showcased as some of the 'carbon cutters'.
