What's coming up this week

Motorcycle Madness

Phil Pearce is 89 years old (90 in September) and every couple of weeks or so he rides his 650 Classic Kawasaki motorcycle for an hour and a half north of his home in Palmerston North, to carry out possum control work on family land.
He's been making the trip for about 20 years and he says in that time possum numbers have dropped, bush has revived and native birds are returning.
He saw the first possum ever on his farm back during WW2. Little did he know what a problem they would become.

More Doe for Goats Milk

"I'm more of a milk person. I like the big milkers" says stud breeder and goat judge Ray Messervy. But there is a reason for that. His daughter suffered from chronic eczema and the family doctor suggested she tried goats milk. Ray went out and bought a milking doe and after drinking the milk for three weeks her eczema disappeared. That was 50 years ago and since then the Amberley man has been goat mad. He has a soft spot for Sable Saanan goats. His doe Strontian Gayre won Top Lactation Doe Of The Year last year. "She's milked over 2000 litres in a year," Ray says proudly. He also took out The New Zealand Dairy Goat industry's breeder of excellence award.
