£2.7m Funding Grant

We received fantastic news in January that Sydney Gardens had been awarded £2.7m from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) for the regeneration of the gardens. Thank you to all who gave feedback and support at the public consultations.

The funding will be used to restore historic buildings and invest in landscape and garden restoration. Also, a new play area for all ages will be created.

The project will be carried out over 3 years from 2019-2021. Alongside this work will be a programme of events and activities covering art, nature, horticulture, play, wild life, archaeology, history and more.

For further information go to: www.bathnes.gov.uk/sydneygardens

Two local companies have already been contracted to work on the project; BBA are the project Architects and Greenhalgh are the project Landscape Architects.

News

The Sydney Gardens project will be recruiting a Horticultural Participation officer, starting in the summer. They will be leading the Sydney Gardening Club with a mid-week volunteer gardening session.

Our Gardening Session in Sydney Gardens

This month the volunteers at the gardening session cleared the flowerbeds near the Bathwick Street entrance into the park. The ground was then prepared for sowing this year’s wild flower seeds. The photos show clearing the flowerbeds, mixing seeds with sand, sowing seeds and stamping down the earth to bed in the seeds. The soil was then watered because no rain was anticipated over the next few days. We now look forward to the summer’s display of vibrant colour.

A peak inside the Bothy!

The Bothy was originally built as an electricity substation. It is now used as a store before being repurposed. The Project plans for this building, when refurbished, will be a model of exchange. This would mean an artist or maker such as a ceramicist or woodworker would use The Bothy as their studio in exchange for free participatory and educational sessions for the public and the park users over the year. More news on this as the Sydney Gardens Project develops.
