A Few Chords from the President

Remember... membership renewals... and ... in a few chords from the president this month we include a strumming note about the fantastic SPRUKESTAR competition for which we are entering round three this month of June. Rounds one and two have been amazing, this months performances by John and Chan and the performances by Graham and Lesley and Sally have been most entertaining. As I write this report, I am arranging to head off to Northside jam at Northern Suburbs Bowlo on Tuesday to hear the play-offs between Chan and Graham Hall. What a vast array of quality we can attract. I have also received the Gretsch Ukulele from our SPRUKE Competition Sponsors Guitar Brothers, which we are raffling off to raise the prize moneys for the SPRUKESTAR competition, this will be on display at all future the Jams until it is drawn. It’s a little beauty, with a great tone, and beautiful finish.

I can’t emphasise enough what an exciting club BUMS is to belong to, offering the prospect of being able to participate in a ukulele strumming activity every week and sometimes more than once a week. On that note... Good news for those who attend the TUTUs strum in Toowong, we have finally been upgraded and moved off the veranda and inside. Not a night too soon really, as it’s starting to get chilly out there. If you are interested in a small gathering of free-form strumming you might like to attend the TUTUs jam. It offers a different approach with the jam leader (me) choosing and preparing about 30 songs from which those who attend get to select the ones they wish to play.

Other good news for BUMS is that our regular bass player Cath McCourt has agreed to lead the WEBUMS jam at Hope Street Cafe on Boundary Road, West End, on the second Friday of each month. Her first event will be the June Jam. If you can make it on Friday the 14th I can guarantee you an exciting evening with a most very talented Ukulele player and singer in our Cath.

Finally, stay tuned for the announcement about our up coming Advanced Bass Riff work shop, with Mark Cryle in July. Those active in the contemporary live music scene will know Mark as a singer, song writer and musician of considerable talent and experience. He will be bringing this to bear on a workshop specifically designed for experienced bass players who want to extend their skill and repertoires. Stay tuned for the announcement, and note that members get a significant discount.

Which brings me to a close.... with the reminder to renew your membership this month.
