Library Smoking Ban
In December 2018, Governor Cuomo signed S.169-B Rivera / A.330-B Dinowitz into law. This legislation amended Public Health Law §1399-o by adding a new subdivision 6 to read:
6. Smoking shall not be permitted and no person shall smoke within one hundred feet of the entrances, exits or outdoor areas of any public or association library as defined in subdivision two of section two hundred fifty-three of the education law; provided, however, that the provisions of this subdivision shall not apply to smoking in a residence, or within the real property boundary lines of such residential real property.
We are working currently to provide information to libraries on the best way to work with the new law in regards to signage and enforcement.
NYLA Travel Grants: Applications Available Now! CCLS is offering 13 grants of up to $500 each to attend the 2019 NYLA conference in Saratoga Springs. Applications will be due on May 31, 2019. We have moved the application process to May in order to allow all members to take advantage of the early bird registration. We recommend that you book your hotel early, especially if you want to be in the conference hotel. Hotels fill up quickly.
NYS Library Construction Aid It's never too early to be thinking about construction projects. Unfortunately, Library Construction Aid has been cut, so CCLS will have a smaller amount to work with than we did last year. Start thinking about projects and reach of to Jan with ideas.

Adult Literacy Grant Opportunity
Chautauqua County new one-on-one Tutoring Opportunity!
For the first time, CCLS is working with Literacy Volunteers of Chautauqua County (LVCC) to find community members interested in becoming a tutor. No experience is necessary, LVCC provides tutor training for free!
This program is perfect for adults interested in giving back in their communities. Upon completion of the training, tutors will be paired with a student and will conduct tutoring sessions in your library.
How it works:
Tutoring sessions conducted through the Grant will be counted a library sponsored programs.
Tutors receive the training from LVCC and meet with their students at your library.
The library keeps a sign in sheet (provided by CCLS) for the tutor to sign in when they come for a tutoring session.
The library collects surveys (provided by CCLS) from the tutors and students when the tutor has them filled out and returns them to CCLS.
The library provides information about library services and events to the tutor and student. This is the perfect opportunity to highlight programs for children and adults.
Library staff casually observe the tutoring sessions and give feedback to CCLS. “Did it look like things went well?” “Did you notice improvement in that student’s interest in learning?”
Any adult can be a tutor and work with a student to gain the skills they need to be a contributor in their community. If you know someone who may be interested, have them contact Julie LaGrow at LVCC about tutor training through the Adult Literacy Grant, lvacc@netsync.net . 716-366-4438. Julie has lots of students waiting for tutors. Your patrons will make a lasting impact on the life of their student!

Thanks to the CCLS Adult Literacy Grant,
literacy tutors from Cattaraugus Community Action, Inc. are available to work with patrons who are in need of tutoring in adult literacy all types.
Do you know patrons who might benefit from assistance with their reading? Are there patrons who would like help learning math? Who want to be more proficient in an area of basic literacy? Are there a local organization that have clients that would benefit from this? Please let us know and we will put CCA, Inc. in contact with you to arrange tutoring sessions at your library. This program is sponsored by CCLS, so you will be able to count the sessions as one-on-one programs in adult literacy on your annual report.
What you need to do – Recruit students in need of tutors. Have a sign in sheet for the tutors when they visit the library. Make basic observations about the sessions. Did they seem to go well? Did the patron seem satisfied with the tutoring?
What CCA, Inc. will do – Provide tutors to meet with the students at the library. They will evaluate the student and have the student fill out a survey about the tutoring.
All of this information will be collected by CCLS and compiled for use in the grant’s final report.

Braille Bricks from LEGO
Lego announced Braille Bricks, which will be molded with the same number of studs used for individual letters and numbers in the Braille alphabet:
To allow "sighted teachers, students and family members to interact on equal terms, each brick will also feature a printed letter or character."
"This ... brings a whole new and playful approach to get blind and visually impaired children interested in learning Braille.
Help support the library and enjoy a fun 5K through Jamestown!
Prendergast Library continues its fundraising efforts with the 13th annual Run for Literacy. The 5K race is on Saturday May 11, with registration from 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. The race starts at 9:00 a.m. with walkers starting shortly after.
Registration costs $20, and can be completed online, at the library, or on the day of the race. Awards will be given to the overall top male and female runners, and to the top two male and female runners in 5-year age groups.
Last year’s winners included Remington Whitcomb, John Gustafson, Willow Fodor, and CCLS’s very own Kathy Gustafson!
This is a great team building event and gives runners an opportunity to compete in a friendly race. The race course runs from the middle of Cherry St., down 5th St. to Prendergast Ave. down to Lake View Cemetery where there is a route through the cemetery, then back up Prendergast to 6th St, down to Cherry St. and ends in front of the library’s front doors.

Digital access to the 2020 Census at New York’s public libraries will be a major factor in achieving a fair and accurate count in New York State. The 2020 Census is less than a year away, but, so far, public discussion about the Census has not been focused on preparing libraries for the digital security, privacy or access implications of a digital census. To build capacity and technical support at libraries, and to ensure that libraries are able to preserve patron privacy during the digital census, the Digital Equity Laboratory at the New School has made tools available to help libraries implement best digital security practices for the 2020 Census.

These promise to be fun, interactive workshops with many practical tips for using everyday items to enhance your storytimes. Each member library attending will go home with something to begin putting what was learned to use. Stipends for attending are available. Lunch is provided.
