ABT Synod - Those Who Mourn
May 13, 2019

The following notification is being sent from the Synod office on behalf of Bishop Larry.
Beloved of God,

May grace and peace be yours in abundance. (1 Peter 1:2a)

Together, as a Synod family we are called to uphold in prayer family and friends who mourn the death of loved ones.

I invite your prayers for all who grieve the death of Rev. Ken Harris (father of Greg and Reverend Daranne Harris) who passed away Sunday May 12. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, May 18, at 10:00 am, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Richmond, BC.

The family has provided the following biographical information about Ken:

Harvey Kendall (Ken) Harris was born in Parkland, AB.  He received his schooling in Parkland and at Mount Royal College, Calgary.  He worked in the oil industry in Calgary and was transferred to Denver, Colorado in 1962. After one year in Denver, he decided to make complete a dream he held in his life to become a pastor of Word and Sacrament.  In 1965, he completed his undergraduate degree at Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, and entered Wartburg Lutheran Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa.  Ken graduated and was ordained in 1968.  He served Lutheran parishes in Omaha, Nebraska, and in Innisfail, Bentley and Red Deer, AB.  He was pastor of Our Saviour Lutheran, Richmond, BC, for over twenty-two years.  He retired Pentecost 1999 and served various parishes on an interim basis throughout the Lower Mainland for ten years.  Ken is left to mourn his loving family -- his wife, Eva; son Greg and wife Daranne, and grandson Spencer; sister-in-law Ann Marie and her husband Steve Henderson, niece Erica, nephew Karl; a sister Ventress Morrison and family in Calgary.  He was predeceased by his daughter, Karen, in 1986, and brother Renell.

"Lord, now let your servant go in peace for my eyes have seen your salvation" (Luke 2:29).

Rest eternal grant him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

Perhaps the following will guide our prayer:

Compassionate God, give courage and faith to all those who mourn, that they may have the strength to meet the days ahead with steadfastness and patience; not as those who are without hope, but in thankful remembrance of your great goodness, and in the joyful expectation of eternal life in your presence, with those they love; through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and LORD. (ELW Pastoral Care 278)

"The God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit" (Romans 15:13).

In Christ Jesus-
Shalom,
+ Larry
