May 2019

Most of this week’s newsletter is devoted to some very special editions of older titles from Nazraeli Press, featuring – but not limited to – Michael Kenna titles. Firstly, though, news of one new and one forthcoming publication by Japanese photographers. Our next newsletter will be full of new titles.

New titles

Hiroshi Watanabe | Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things

We have been waiting some time for a new book by Hiroshi Watanabe. Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things is a new edition of classic short Japanese horror stories written by Lafcadio Hearn over a century ago. Hearn was born in Greece, grew up in Ireland, and emigrated to the US. He later moved to Japan and married a Japanese woman, who travelled all around Japan with him and they collected many strange traditional folk stories. Those stories are now visually revitalized by accompanying photographs by award winning photographer Hiroshi Watanabe. Unsigned copies of Kwaidan are due to be available from 14 May. If you’re prepared to wait a little longer, signed copies will be available. There is also a limited edition with a choice of four prints. When ordering, please let us know which print you would like.

We also have copies of Watanabe’s earlier titles I See Angels Every Day, Love Point and the Nazraeli One Picture Book of Love Point with print. All of these are signed.

Masahisa Fukase | Kazoku (Family)

The other Japanese title is not due out till September but we anticipate that advance demand will be considerable so those interested in Masahisa Fukase’s work may wish to reserve a copy now. Mack are publishing a new edition of his final work Kazoku (Family) which comprises a sequence of group portraits of his family taken from 1971 to 1989. “True to his style, Fukase often introduced third-party models and humorous elements to juxtapose the ineluctable reality of time passing and the dwindling family group.” You can see sample images here but please note that they are taken from previous editions. We will bring more information about the Mack edition as it becomes available.

Nazraeli Specials

A few weeks ago, I got a very welcome message from Nazraeli in the US saying that, as a result of reorganising their storage, they had found quite a few hidden gems from the past. We have been lucky enough to get a good selection of these.

The majority of them are out of print and nearly all are in mint condition. Any imperfections will be specified at the beginning of a description on the relevant webpage. We have a small number of copies of each of these titles and, in some cases, only a single copy. They’re not cheap but nearly all are considerably cheaper than the lowest price we have found online for a new, mint copy. If you click on a link and you don’t find the page, it means they’ve already gone – sorry. You can find all of them listed together on our website.

The first is an extremely scarce book by Yamamoto Masao, A Box of Ku, dating from 1998.

There are signed first editions of Dick Arentz’s The Grand Tour. Arentz is one of the foremost living exponents of platinum palladium printing.

There are signed first editions of two Robert Adams books: Pine Valley

and I Hear the Leaves and Love the Light.

Now for all those Michael Kenna titles. A signed first edition of A Twenty-Year Retrospective

A signed second printing of Retrospective Two

Signed first editions of Night Work, a selection of Michael Kenna's finest night photographs up till 2000 when it was published. Just a personal opinion, of course, but I think this is one of Kenna’s best publications.

The extremely scarce Recent Travels of 2008, published by HSBC in association with Nazraeli but intended only for internal distribution.

A signed copy of the first edition of Japan, long out of print and very scarce.

An equally scarce first edition of Hokkaido. Copies have slight scuffing on the slipcase but otherwise are in mint condition.

A signed, numbered limited edition of 100 of Ratcliffe Power Station.

A first edition of Calais Lace - long out of print.

A first edition of Easter Island in a cloth slipcase, limited to 1000 numbered copies.

A slipcased first edition of Shinan.

A first edition in mint condition of Mont St Michel
